As with all walks of life those we love sometimes leave us before we want them too and before they should.  There are various reasons why these wrestlers died but the one thing they all have in common is that they all left us too soon.

“British Bulldog” Davey Boy Smith

TRCW: Top Rope Championship Wrestling Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada May 11, 2002

Died May 18, 2002 after suffering a heart attack possibly related to past anabolic steroid use, he was 39 years old.

Royal Rumble Reaction

The 2016 Royal Rumble is over and I didn't do too good on my predictions.  

Darren Young & Damien Sandow vs The Dudley Boys: Bubba Ray & D-Von vs. The Ascension: Konnor & Victor vs. Mark Henry & Jack Swagger
Really surprised at Mark Henry & Swagger winning, I didn't think they would have any affect on the outcome and they didn't, both eliminated in about a minute. 

Tag Team Champions: The New Day: Kofi Kingston & Big E w/ Xavier Woods vs. The Usos: Jimmy & Jey
I got this one right and I really enjoyed this tag match.  Usos are really good as a team and I really liked the finishing sequence. 

United States Champion: Alberto Del Rio vs. Kalisto
Once again I was wrong as Kalisto captured the United States Championship for the second time in as many weeks in a really good match with Del Rio.  It'll be interesting to see where they go with Kalisto as champion, long term or transition. 

Intercontinental Championship Last Man Standing: Champion Dean Ambrose vs. Kevin Owens
Once again I was wrong about the outcome as Dean Ambrose walked out the Intercontinental Champion.  This was the match of the night for me, solid from top to bottom and the finish was fantastic.  These guys really beat the tar out of each other,  One of my favorite moments was when Owens was knocked over the announce table and he crashed into Michael Cole and kept pushing on his face, hilarious!

Diva's Champion: Charlotte w/ "Nature Boy" Ric Flair vs. Becky Lynch
I was right about this one! Becky came out looking so strong and Charlotte like the chicken shit heel who just barely kept her title.  Of course the post match attack by Sasha Banks starts their feud towards Mania sadly leaving Becky in the background. 

Royal Rumble Match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship
I figured that Triple H would be in this match and cost Reigns the title, didn't think Trips would walk out as Champion.  I was very excited to see AJ Styles debut in the match, we didn't see anything from him to speak of.  He did get a couple eliminations and based on Kevin Owens eliminating him that'll be his first feud.  He got a huge pop and the 28 minutes he was in there several "AJ Styles" chants broke out. 

The most exciting time of the Rumble match was the near 5 minutes that Kevin Owens was in it.  He got a  big pop, his initial flurry with AJ before the tossed out Styles and mocked him, then his flurry with Ambrose, then with Sami Zayn until Zayn threw Owens out. After Zayn was eliminated the crowd seemed to die down. Until it came down to Triple H & Ambrose.  

Going towards WrestleMania we have Triple H vs. Reigns, Brock vs. The Wyatts, and Kevin Owens vs. Zayn or Styles or Ambrose again. 

It was very good show with some great matches.  I know many will be pissed with the Rumble match but it was what it was.  The ending wasn't my favorite either, not my pick to win, but it could have been worse I reckon.

Royal Rumble Predictions

I don't normally post these type of blogs but I figured that I would this time.

Pre-Show

Darren Young & Damien Sandow vs The Dudley Boys: Bubba Ray & D-Von vs. The Ascension: Konnor & Victor vs. Mark Henry & Jack Swagger

The winners of this match get to enter the Royal Rumble alter in the night.  Of all the people in the match the Dudley's are the only ones I can see the fans caring about moving forward.  Realistically though none of them are going to win the Rumble match itself.

Tag Team Champions: The New Day: Kofi Kingston & Big E w/ Xavier Woods vs. The Usos: Jimmy & Jey

New Day retains, I don't see them dropping the tag titles anytime soon to any team at this point.

United States Champion: Alberto Del Rio vs. Kalisto

Alberto retains, although I don't see him as a long term champion I also don't see Kalisto as a viable champion.  Sin Cara will be back soon from his injury bringing their team back together.  The US Championship used to mean something a long time ago and men raged wars over it.  Cena's US Open Challenge was really good and I would love to see that come back.

Diva's Champion: Charlotte w/ "Nature Boy" Ric Flair vs. Becky Lynch

Charlotte will retain cheating of course.  I see Charlotte with a nice long title run, I'm hoping over a year making it mean more when she loses it.  Nikki Bella's long title reign did nothing to strengthen the title as she is the last of the WWE "barbie doll" wrestlers.  I do see Becky coming out looking even stronger and more over as a babyface than when she went into the match.

Intercontinental Championship Last Man Standing: Champion Dean Ambrose vs. Kevin Owens

Kevin Owens will win this match and take his Championship back.  Owens can make the title mean something that Ambrose just can't do.  The only way I would be okay with Owens not winning is if he returned later and won the World Championship in the Rumble Match.

Royal Rumble Match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship

For the first time the Champion, Roman Reigns, will have to defend his championship in the Rumble match, and of course he has number one.  I do not see Roman walking out as champion.  I predict two possible outcomes for him.  Either he and Lesnar will eliminate each other building to a match at WrestleMania or Triple H will cause Reigns elimination leading to a match between them at WrestleMania.

I think WWE has the perfect opportunity to do something they have never done before, something that is historic by having AJ Styles debut in and win the Rumble match and the WWE World Championship.

I also think Jake Roberts will be a surprise entrant, other good ones would be Kevin Von Erich and Tully Blanchard.

Wrestle Kingdom 10 and New Year Dash

It took a me a couple weeks but I finally was able to finish watch New Japan Pro Wrestling's Wrestle Kingdom 10 and New Year's Dash events.  Wrestle Kingdom 10 is New Japans annual January 4th Tokyo Dome show which is their biggest show of the year.  New Year's Dash takes place the day after Wrestle Kingdom in Korakuen Hall and typically launches the new year of New Japan.

The commentary team for both days consisted of Kevin Kelly, Matt Striker, and Yoshi Tatsu.  Tatsu was on the team to help with the Japanese translation and to explain things from a Japanese perspective that we as American's might not understand.  Tatsu failed in almost every way imaginable.  Even when Striker and Kelly lobed him softballs he hit fouls balls if he didn't just whiff altogether.  Striker seemed to have a better understanding of what was going on.  Most will not agree with me but I feel that Kelly and Striker were a better duo than last years Jim Ross and Striker.

Wrestle Kingdom 10 featured 10 matches total including the pre-show New Japan Rumble.  The card was loaded with so many great matches.  From top to bottom it was one of the strongest match line ups I have seen in a long time.  I'm not going to break down each match just my favorites.

IWGP Champion: Kazuchika Okada vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi
This match was rated 5 Stars by Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer and rightfully so.  Although not my favorite match on the card these two put on a hell of a match that was indeed the passing of the torch from Tanahashi to Okada who is the future of NJPW.  Okada retained his title

IWGP Intercontinental Champion: Shinsuke Nakamura vs. AJ Styles
This match was amazing, and honestly I thought it was better than Okada vs. Tanahashi.  Knowing now that AJ was finishing up with New Japan after the Dash and Nakamura at the end of the month this match takes on a whole new meaning.  Knowing how Wrestle Kingdom 10 is the most watched show worldwide for New Japan these two tore the house down for all to see just how good they are.  After the finish when Nakamura retained two fist bumped which to me represents that they were saying, we just killed it.

NEVER Openweight Champion: Tomohiro Ishii vs. Katsuyori Shibata
Never in my life I have seen two men beat the tar out of each other like these two did.  It gives new meaning to strong style wrestling.  I cringed multiple times and legit think they both got knocked out, or at the least very, very loopy at different times.  When they started headbutting each other I let out a groan.  I wish I could personally thank both of these men for what they gave in this match.  Shibata defeated Ishii to win the championship with his finisher the PK - penalty kick.

New Year's Dash was a great show I really, really enjoyed the tag team match of Matt Sydal & Ricochet vs. David Finlay & Jay White.  Both Finlay and White are really good and I look forward to seeing more of their matches.  I know Finlay is a 3rd generation star, his father being Dave "Fit" Finlay one my all time favorite, I don't know anything about White.

"Machine Gun" Karl Anderson

Also Karl Anderson is really friggin awesome!  He appears to be in peak condition at this point in his career and with rumors of him soon departing NJPW for the WWE it'll be interesting to see if he is used in similar fashion in the WWE.  He's been in Japan for the last 8 years, has been in the IWGP Tag Team Championship picture for the last 5 1/2 years and competed at the last 8 Wrestle Kingdom cards.  I think it's going to be hard for him to give up that spot that he's in.

Another great match saw Kenny Omega & AJ Styles defeated Shinsuke Nakamura & Yoshi-Hashi wehn Omega pinned Nakamura after Katayoku no Tenshi aka One Winged Angel.  After the match Omega hit Styles with the One Winged Angel, the rest of the Bullet Club came to the ring with all members eventually beating down Styles ousting him from the group.  Omega then took the mic declared his intention of moving to the heavyweight division and challenging Nakamura for the Intercontinental Championship.

A few days later Nakamura was stripped of the title after he confirmed his intention of leaving for the WWE Performance Center in February.

PWG 2015 Battle of Los Angeles

The Pro Wrestling Guerrilla 2015 Battle of Los Angeles was UN-BE-LIEVABLE!

August 28, 29, & 30 Reseda, California


Of course once I got the three events it was after my days off and when I started my 10 hour shift rotations which severely limits my free time for watching Pro Wrestling matches.  Because of this I watch the events a match or two at a time over a period of a few days which is actually kind of awesome.


I have determined that PWG is my favorite promotion to watch, I realize they only run 9 – 10 shows a year but they are always awesome.  The venue, the atmosphere, filming style, the commentary, everything about it is amazing.  Watching the shows over a few days spreads out the awesomeness!

This year PWG brought in wrestlers the England, Wales, Scotland, Holland, Canada, & Mexico to compete in the tournament with several wrestlers making their PWG debuts.  It was truly an international event!


NIGHT 1 August 28^th


First Round Matches


Brian Cage defeated Aero Star with a Steiner Screwdriver Suplex

I had never seen Aero Star before and as we all know Brian Cage is an f’n machine.   I was quite impressed with Aero Star’s ability and his unique high flying manor.  When he does splashes or planchas to the floor is basically makes his body stiff as a board until impact so it looks a little odd but it’s unique and definitely his own thing.


Biff Busick defeated Andrew Everett
It was a great match that featured both wrestler’s key styles mixing mat based wrestling with high flying.  Biff went gremlin mode at one point grabbing Everett by the jaw and laying in several slaps to the face.


William Ospreay pinned Mark Andrews
I had seen a couple Ospreay matches on You Tube but had never heard of Mark Andrews.  Both of these wrestlers are from the UK, as are 3 others in the tournament this year, and were making their PWG debuts.  It was a great introduction to both wrestlers, the fans wildly behind Ospreay in this match.  I was impressed by both of them and their high flying techniques and a very unique Canadian destroyer style DDT.


Non-Tournament Tag Team Match
Los Gueros del Cielo: Angelico & Jack Evans defeated Inner City Machine Guns: Rich Swan & Ricochet when Evans pinned Swan after a 630 splash.
This match started with a dance contest and then exploded into a one high spot after another and some amazing acrobatics by Jack Evans.  This was the third match I have seen Angelico in and I am really impressed by him.  I know on night 2 Evans and Angelico have a singles match and I’m looking forward to it.


First Round Matches


Pentagon Jr. pinned Drago
The battle of two AAA luchadores with the crowd solidly behind Pentagon Jr.  This match was odd as the beginning and end were fast paced and high impact but the middle really dragged and almost came to a standstill.  Some good mat wrestling and submissions by Pentagon Jr.


Matt Sydal pinned Fenix
I was expecting some serious high flying, and we got some, but Sydal really worked Fenix’s leg trying to slow down the high flyer, but he didn’t succeed.  Fenix has unbelievable balance and the way he flies through the air is amazing.  Sydal played the heel much of the match but the crowd popped when he won.


Non Tournament Match
Mt. Rushmore 2.0: World Champion Roderick Strong & World Tag Team Champions: The Young Bucks: Nick & Matt Jackson defeated Eurotrash: Zack Sabre Jr., “The Villain” Marty Scurll, & Tommy End.
This match had everything, British style mat wrestling, strong style, high flying, and many, many, many stiff kicks.  A very good match that highlighted all six competitors involved and even though Sabre took the pinfall from Strong, it didn’t hurt him at all and only enhanced the feud where we will eventually see Sabre win the championship from Strong.


NIGHT 2 August 29^th

First Round Matches


“The Villian” Marty Scurll defeated Rich Swan
Decent match was really surprised that Scurll went over but I’m glad to get the chance to see him in the next round which is against Trevor Lee.  For some reason Scurll just looks really small to me, he’s my height but it’s almost like, with his long beard and hair, that his head is disproportioned in size to his body.  Either way though it was a good match and a great way to kick off night two of the 2015 Battle of Los Angeles.


Jack Evans pinned Angelico

In a match-up of tag team partners the very vocal Jack Evans got the win to advance.  Evans wasn’t playing full blown heel but was making some very disparaging remarks to the crowd for the second consecutive day.  At one point Evans had him a drink and went all drunken master, it was done brilliantly especially the corkscrew head butt.


Chris Hero pinned Timothy Thatcher
This was a methodical and extremely hard hitting match between both of these men.  I really like Hero a lot and I know the elbow is his specialty, but sometimes I think he hits it too many times.


Tag Team Match


Aero Star & Fenix defeated Drago & Pentagon Jr.
This was a fast paced high flying match with all 4 leaving everything in the ring.  Fenix is so amazing, his corkscrew dive off the top rope to the floor is phenomenal!  Pentagon is a bad ass, plain and simply.  The match ended with a double pin on Drago and Pentagon after different piledriver variations.


First Round Matches


Tommy End pinned Drew Gulak
This match wasn’t very long, it was mat based and very, very physical and violent with severe striking by both of them.  I liked this match because it was different and ended unexpectedly.


“Speedball” Mike Bailey pinned Drew Galloway
Visually this was a massive mismatch.  Galloway easily has a foot on Bailey and a 50 – 60 pound weight advantage.  Bailey utilized his kicking ability and quickness to out maneuver Galloway to get the eventual win.  This is just another great match by Bailey in the long line he’s been having as of late.  Galloway was fantastic in the ring and it obvious how WWE missed the boat with him.


Zack Sabre Jr. pinned Ricochet
A high-flying and mat based affair with the future of professional wrestling.  Sabre got the win


Six Person Tag Team Guerrilla Warfare Match
Mt. Rushmore 2.0: Super Dragon and Tag Team Champions: The Young Bucks: Matt & Nick Jackson defeated Biff Busick, Andrew Everett, & Trevor Lee.


This match was absolutely crazy fighting all over the building using anything they could find as weapons.  All six of them were flying all over place, vicious chairshots, ladders, trash cans, one table the Bucks broke out the thumbtack sneakers, one for each this time.   Biff finally got his hands on Dragon and even though in the end Dragon pinned Biff of the win for his team, Biff beat the tar out of Dragon first.


After the match Excalibur got in the ring to say he’s had enough of 2.0 and was going to put a team together to go against them.  Dragon and Bucks ran back and beat up Excalibur, Chris Hero made the save but eventually was also laid out


NIGHT 3 August 30^th


Second Round Matches


Jack Evans pinned Brian Cage

Jack Evans cut another scathing promo endearing himself to Brian Cage and the fans.  Cage beat the tar out of Evans for a few moments before Evans hit is one offensive kick and then scored a quick upset pin.


Chris Hero pinned Biff Busick

Another brutally stiff match that featured lots of striking and ended with an avalanche piledriver from the second rope.


“The Villain” Marty Scurll submitted Trevor Lee

Scurll worked the shoulder the entire match leading to his chicken wing finisher.  Trevor Lee was fantastic as always.


Zack Sabre Jr. defeated Pentagon Jr.

Very little high flying, lots and lots of mat based wrestling and VERY unique submissions holds.  Sabre got the win with a kimura, or as JR calls it a double wrist lock.


“Speedball” Mike Bailey defeated Tommy End
So many brutally stiff kicks from both men in this match, Bailey got a decisive victory in this match where the other first round matches seemed to be quick or fluke wins.  Tommy End is THE man


William Ospreay defeated Matt Sydal

These two have a very similar style with fast paced high flying and stiff strikes.


Eight Man Tag
Mt. Rushmore 2.0: Super Dragon, World Champion Roderick Strong & World Tag Team Champions: The Young Bucks: Nick & Matt Jackson defeated Angelico, Fenix & Inner City Machine Guns: Rich Swann & Ricochet
This was high flying everyone going everywhere match with lots of high flying awesomeness. Of course Mt Rushmore couldn't lose this weekend with Rich Swann being pinned.


Semi-Final Round Matches


Chris Hero defeated Jack Evans
Before and after this match Evans addressed the crowd much the same he has the last two nights belittling the crowd.   Evans took a beating this entire match but kicked out of every pinfall attempt at a 1 count, except for the final one where the ref reached 3.


“Speedball” Mike Bailey defeated William Ospreay

Again two similarly styled competitors bringing it with high flying and Bailey's brutal and precise kicks.  I'd love to see a longer match between the two.


Zack Sabre Jr. defeated “The Villian” Mart Scurll

I loved this match!  There was comedy, but it was the cheeky British style comedy and some really great mat wrestling and reversals including some stuff I've never ever seen before!


Ten Person Tag Team Match
Aero Star, Drew Galloway, Drew Gulak, & Best Friends: Chuck Taylor & Trent?  Vs. Mark Andrews, Tommaso Ciampa, Drago, Andrew Everett, & Timothy Thatcher

This was a giant train wreck! We had a 10 way nut shot, slow motion action, intense mat wrestling, high flying, everything, just everything.


2015 Battle of Los Angeles Finals


Zack Sabre Jr. defeated Chris Hero & “Speedball” Mike Bailey
The match starts with very unique 3 man mat wrestling that I've never seen before!  I don't think it's anything you can practice so it was all very creative.  This match was vicious from beginning to end with stiff, stiff strikes, and submissions galore. Long match too.


Chris Hero pinned Bailey after 3 piledriver variations


Sabre submitted Hero with a double arm bar and stomps to the head.

Roy's Review: Top Rope Promotions Spindle City Rumble

 Here are the results from the Top Rope Promotions Spindle City Rumble on January 1st:

The show started with an in ring segment. TRP Champion Ryan Waters and his buddies Brad Hollister and TK O'Ryan come out and celebrate Waters being champion and the new year. Vinny Marseglia comes out and says that hes pissed because hes injured and can't compete tonight. Then Waters, Hollister and O'Ryan corner him which brings out Nick Steel. Steel says that hes not friends with Vinny but hes not gonna let him get jumped. Steel then challenged Waters and his buds to a fight. Waters acted like he wanted to fight as well. This brought out Guy Alexander, I think he is the authority figure. Guy said that since Waters had screwed so many people out of the title and since he wanted to fight, he was gonna put the title on the line against 30 other men. Guy made the Spindle City Rumble for the title. He also said that Waters had to be #1. Waters was so pissed he almost cried.

Match 1: Mike Bennett and Bob Evans w/Matt Taven defeated The Alden Brothers (Eric and Shane). Taven was supposed to team with Bennett but he injured his knee. The Aldens came out to absolutely no crowd response. You could have heard a pin drop. It was similar to the reaction the Bomb got when he fought Vader in South Paris. This was my first time seeing Eric Alden. He does a similar character to Raven in TNA. He wasn't bad. The match was kinda average. Nothing really special.

Match 2: Slo Feng defeated Hell Monkey. This was a Kaiju Big Battle Showcase Match. It was the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen.

Match 3: Teddy Goodz defeated Interstate Champion Craig Costa w/Marshall McNeil in a Ladder Match to win the title. This was a pretty good match with a bunch of typical ladder spots. Near the end of the match Teddy almost had the belt and some tiny tattooed guy came out and tried stopping him. This brought out Brandon Webb, who attacked the tiny guy. This then brought out Kongo who attacked Webb. Then all 3 guys battled to the back. During all of this Costa made his way up the ladder and almost had the belt but Teddy climbed up a second ladder and tried to stop him. McNeil tried to toss a fireman's helmet to Costa but Teddy intercepted it and hit Costa with it. Then Teddy hit an Ace Crusher off the ladder. He then climbed up and got the belt. The crowd went nuts. Teddy is super over. I've never heard an indy crowd that loud before.

Match 4: TRP Champion Ryan Waters won the 2016 31 man Spindle City Rumble last eliminating Nick Steel to retain. Entrants came out every 90 seconds. This was a great match going about 90 minutes. After the final entrant came out at the 45 minute mark, there were about a dozen guys left and the match went about another 45 minutes. There were many great wrestlers in the match including: Ryan Waters, Chuck O'Neil, Brad Hollister, TK O'Ryan, Mike Bennett, Bob Evans, Anthony Greene, Brandon Webb. There were also some really dumpy guys too. Some awesome spots in this match. Nick Steel is stiff as fuck. He was legit headbutting people all over the place. He hooked up with Chuck O'Neil 3 or 4 times and they beat the ever loving shit out of each other. Some jobber guy came out and said that he was an entrant. He took about 4 entrants to get his gear on up on the stage. When he finally entered Nick Steel headbutted the shit out of him then threw him out but landed extremely hard on the ring steps spine first. Brandon Webb and Kongo beat the hell out of each other many times during this match. Some midget dressed like Stone Cold came out to Stone Cold's music and did stunners to everyone in the ring. Then Nick Steel threw him out. Speaking of Nick Steel his was super blown up but I give him credit for continuing. The final entrant was Marshall McNeil. He was wearing a Bobby Heenan style singlet with one boob showing. I no more than said that he had his tit flopping out and Brandon Webb gave him a massive titty twister and threw him out by his boob. The final 5 was Ryan Waters, Brad Hollister, TK O'Ryan and Mike Bennett. Since Steel was so blown up and couldn't do anything, Waters, Hollister and O'Ryan teamed up on Bennett. It took them awhile to finally get him out but they did. Just as they were all going to triple team Steel, Vinny Marseglia came out. This distracted them enough for Steel to eliminated Hollister and O'Ryan. Waters then beat on Steel some but was distracted by Vinny. Waters said something derogatory to Vinny which really pissed him off. He then tried to get into the ring to attack Waters. This distracted the referees. Steel then got up and threw out Waters, who was paying attention to Vinny, on the opposite side. Since the referees didn't see it, Hollister and O'Ryan who were still at ringside, threw Waters back in. Steel was now distracted by Vinny who was still pissed and distracting the referees. Waters then threw out Steel on the side where the refs were and won the match. Steel then got really pissed at Vinny for costing him the match. Waters then celebrated with Hollister and O'Ryan.

Overall this was a great show. The rumble was excellent. The PAL Hall is a great venue for wrestling and we had excellent seats. If you ever go to a show here get balcony seats you won't be disappointed. I would defiantly go to another show there. I like that their roster is completely different from the other New England feds I have seen. This allowed for me to see a bunch of guys I had never seen before.

2015 My Year of Wrestling

I only managed to attend 9 wrestling related events, and I am very much aware that 4 of those events took place over the course of 1 weekend, but still it’s 4 separate wrestling themed events.  I was honestly surprised by the lack of shows, I thought I had been to more.

However I did watch more wrestling this year than I think ever before.  With WWE network I watched all 12 PPV’s, 5 NXT takeover events, and 4 special live events and numerous past events.  Also I’ve watched more independent wrestling on You Tube than before mostly due to the Rawlternative events.  Also I’ve watched my share of AAA, New Japan, PWG, and more Japanese promotions.

Let's not forget to include the large number of wrestling podcasts that I took in as well, Art of Wrestling, Talk is Jericho, Stone Cold Podcast, Jim Cornett, and many more.

So maybe I didn’t hit a ton of shows in person, I watched me some wrestling!

I’m not going to rate the shows that I went to, I will say one of the best days of wrestling I have been to in many years was March 7^th at the Boston Pro Wrestling Marathon in Abington.  Two sets of matches and a live Art of Wrestling Podcast in between.  It was a really fun day of wrestling.

Top to bottom the best show I went to was Limitless Wrestling in November.  The best match of the year was probably Biff Busick vs. Mike Mondo from show 1 on March 7^th in Mass.

The WWE show was special because it was Addison’s 1^st WWE Show (Canaan’s 4^th WWE show) and one of the best WWE house shows I have been to in a long time.
