The Last Match: Memphis Wrestling Legends

In this post we look at the Last Match of Memphis Wrestling Legends.

Jerry "The King" Lawler
January 21, 2023 Winston-Salem, North Carolina
AML: Acts Of War Games 2
defeated the Beer City Bruiser

The King is one of the most well known wrestlers in the world for not only his over 50 years in the ring but his near 30 years as a commentator in the WWE, 20 spent with partner Jim Ross.  There is no way i could summarize Lawler's career in a short paragraph, he's a former among his numerous championships that he held is is a former AWA World Heavyweight Champion.  He also held one championship 57 times that was known as the:

NWA Southern Heavyweight Championship (Mid-America version)
NWA Southern Heavyweight Championship (Memphis version)
Mid-Southern Heavyweight Championship
AWA Southern Heavyweight Championship
USWA Southern Heavyweight Championship
USWA Heavyweight Championship
MCW Southern Heavyweight Championship
Memphis Wrestling Southern Heavyweight Championship

Had it not been for health issues, I think Lawler would still be wrestling occasionally today.  In fact of I don't think we have actually seen the last match of Jerry "The King" Lawler, I think he has one more left in him.  The photo of us is from April 15, 2006 in Lynn, Massachusetts for Big Time Wrestling.  That night The King defeated Kamala the Ugandan Giant in a Lumberjack match.

Sputnik Monroe
March 7, 1988 Memphis, Tennessee, Mid-South Coliseum
CWA: Continental Wrestling Association
defeated by Billy Wicks

One of the most controversial wrestlers of his area, Sputnik began wrestling in 1945 and is viewed as many as a civil rights activist for the support of his black fan base.  He captured numerous regional championships and was also inducted into the 2018 WWE Hall of Fame.  You should go watch the terrific documentary Memphis Heat where Sputnik's career is heavily covered.  He passed away in 2006 at the age of 77.

"Fabulous" Jackie Fargo
October 30, 2004 Memphis, Tennessee, Mid-South Coliseum
Memphis Wrestling Throwback Night III - "A Nightmare In Memphis"
with Corey Maclin & Stan Lane defeat Jerry "The King" Lawler & The Rock 'n' Roll Express: Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson

The mentor of Jerry Lawler and one halve of the original Fabulous Ones, Jackie Fargo was the original King of Memphis wrestling.  He began his career in 1950 with his full time run winding down in the mid 1980's with a handful of matches before his final match in 2004.  I read he may have a had a match in 2006 but I cannot find the details of that match.  I met Jackie at the 2009 NWA Legends Fanfest where he signed this photo for me. He passed away on my birthday, June 24, 2013.

Jerry Jarrett
December 12, 1995 Memphis, Tennessee, Mid-South Coliseum
USWA: United States Wrestling Association
with Frank Morrell defeated Bob Armstrong & Gene Johnson

As Jerry's mother Teeny was a wrestling promoter, Jarrett first began in the wrestling business at the age of 7 selling programs.  At age 14 he began promoting his own shows and didn't set into the ring until 1965 at the age of 22 or 23.  His in ring career spanned 30 years, however he is better known today as the promoter and partial owner of numerous wrestling companies including Continental Wrestling Association, the USWA: United States Wrestling Association, and was a founder of NWA TNA.  Along the way he worked as a consultant for WCW and it was set to take over the WWF should Vince McMahon had been found guilty in the steroid trial.  He passed away in 2023 at the age of 80.

Signed Trading Cards: Ivan Putski, Jerry Lawler, & Bunkhouse Buck

This batch is also about some recent through the mail success

"Polish Power" Ivan Putski
This card is from the 1985 Topps WWF card set, it is number 46.  I mailed this card to Mr. Putski on October 26, 2019 and got it back November 8, 2019.

Jerry "The King" Lawler
I mailed these cards to Mr. Lawler's BBQ restaurant in Memphis on October 26th and got them back on November 15th.  The card on the right is from the 1997 Cardinal WWF Trivia game and the card on the left is from the 2003 Fleer WrestleMania XIX set.

Bunkhouse Buck
This card is from the 1995 WCW Cardz set, and I believe that this is the only trading card featuring Jimmy Golden aka Bunkhouse Buck.  I mail it to him on November 16th and got it back on the 27th.

Roy's Review: Northeast Wrestling Results 3/3/2017

Here is my review of Northeast Wrestling's Wrestlefest 21 on March 3, 2017 in Waterbury, Connecticut.

In ring: A guy who I believe to be the authority figure, comes out and announces that there have been some changes to the matches. Warbeard Hanson won't be battling TK O'Ryan for the Northeast Wrestling title. Instead he will be battling Ron Zombie and O'Ryan will defend against a mystery opponent.

Match 1: Flip Gordon defeated Brad Hollister and Vinny Marseglia
This was a good match but it would have been way better if Vinny wasn't in it. All he did was gyrate like an idiot and no sell everything. Hollister on the other hand was a beast hitting suplexes all over the place including one on Flip while he had Vinny in a fireman's carry. Flip won with a 450 splash on Hollister.
7/10

Match 2: The Battle Brothers: Chris &Anthony defeated Adrenaline Rush: Keith Youngblood and Dan Evans
This was a decent tag match but nothing really special. The Battle Brothers are a solid big guy team. Adrenaline Rush on the other, I can't say the same. Youngblood is good, but Evans is terrible. Youngblood would do much better on his own.
6/10

Match 3: Wrecking Ball Legursky w/Marshall McNeil defeated Donovan Dijak
Good big man match. I was surprised at how over Wrecking Ball is in this fed even though he is a heel. Dijak got his ass kicked for most of the match which made Wrecking Ball look like a monster destroyer. Dijak made a good comeback but surprisingly lost to a World's Strongest Slam type move.
7.25/10

Match 4: Ron Zombie defeated Warbeard Hanson
I had never seen Zombie before and I wasn't impressed. This match was really slow and boring but this was no fault of Hanson. He did the best he could.
4/10

Match 5: Bull Dread defeated Cam Zagami w/Romeo Roselli by DQ
This only lasted a few minutes, then Roselli got involved causing the DQ.
1/10

In Ring: Bull Dread challenged Zagami and Roselli to a tag team match. Roselli said that he didn't have a partner. Dread then brings out Jerry "The King" Lawler.

Match 6: Jerry "The King" Lawler and Bull Dread defeated Cam Zagami and Romeo Roselli
This match wasn't very good since Bull Dread is terrible but it was awesome to see Lawler wrestler. He hit a dropkick and got the win after a piledriver on Roselli.
5/10

In Ring: Lawler and Dread celebrate the win until The Godfather comes out with Mandy Leon and Maria Manic as his hoes and they join the celebration.

In Ring: Cam Zagami and Romeo Roselli are licking their wounds and whining about their loss, saying that they weren't ready. Roselli then says that they won't leave until another challenger comes out. Great Khali then came out and wrecked them both with brain chops.

Match 7: Ryback defeated Jake Manning
This was really average. I don't like Jake Manning and that didn't change in this match. Ryback dominated him for most of the match with Manning getting very little offense. Ryback got the win with Shellshock.
5/10

Match 8: Mike Bennett defeated NEW Champion TK O'Ryan to win the title
This is where the show really started to get good. Mike Bennett was revealed as the mystery opponent. The crowd chanted "where is Maria". Bennett said that she was there. This match was very good. I am super impressed with O'Ryan. If he continues to improve I could see him as ROH Champion someday. Some crazy spots including Bennett hitting a pildedriver on a table a ringside. Near the end Maria came out with a chair causing a bunch of confusion which allowed Bennett to hit a low blow and get the win.
8.5/10

In Ring: TK O'Ryan was pissed and challenged Mike Bennett to a rematch at the next show.

Match 9: Cody Rhodes defeated Kurt Angle in a Steel Cage Match

A very good cage match that probably would have gone longer than the 12-15 minutes it got because the cage was kinda dumpy and it took awhile to get it up and make it as safe as they could. Rhodes hit a sick moonsault off the cage but missed. He did get the win in the end with a surprise small package.
8.5/10

This show scored a 52.25 out of 80 for an overall score of 65.31%. I really enjoyed this show. There were 2 very good matches and a bunch of big names to meet. I was awesome to see Jerry Lawler wrestle for the first time in person. It was also really cool being a crowd of 3,000 in a high school gym.
