Wrestling with the Pandemic

I don't do a lot of opinion pieces on this blog.  Yes it can be argued that every post is in essence my opinion about the about the topic I am writing about.  Typically though, those posts are backed up with facts about the events or moments that I am writing about.  Today's post is just my opinion about the current state of wrestling.

The Corona Virus Pandemic has spread across the world essentially bringing it to it's knees.  With events greater than ten people being banned live entertainment has come to a screeching halt.  College sports, professional sports, concerts, plays, theaters, everything has stopped.

Professional wrestling thrives on being performed in front of an audience because the wrestlers feed off the audience's reaction. March 11, 2020 was the last day that both WWE & AEW presented their last shows in front of an audience.  AEW emanated from West Valley City, Utah for Dynamite while NXT was live from Full Sail University.

Penelope Ford with a fisherman's suplex pin on Ana Jay in AEW
Since then both companies have continued to present shows featuring matches with no crowds.  For my money AEW has done a better job with their shows, for the most part, than WWE has done with their multiple shows.  WWE even presented a taped WrestleMania which I was much better than I thought it would be.  WWE have been taping their shows in Orlando area while AEW taped shows first in Jacksonville, Florida before moving tapings to Norcross, Georgia.

It should be noted that neither company is using their full talent rosters due to travel, health risks, and quarantine situations.

WWE has even already taped the Money in the Bank PPV matches at Titan Towers in Stamford where the wrestlers started on the ground floor and fought to the roof where the briefcase was hanging.  I'm actually interested in watching this.

It's not just companies in America that are suffering from this.  In Japan, Mexico, England, Canada, and other countries promotions are either running shows with no crowd or not at all.  New Japan Pro Wrestling hasn't run a show since February 26th.  All Japan Pro Wrestling has run a show with no crowd.  Pro Wrestling Noah just completed the six event Global Tag League tournament with no audience.

Tournament winners and new tag team champions: Dr. Wagner Jr. & Rene Dupree
In Mexico CMLL the longest continuously operating wrestling promotion in the world hasn't had a show since March 13th in Mexico City while their biggest competitor Lucha Libre AAA ran their first show since March 15th with no crowd on April 18th.  The oddest part of this show is that it featured seven one on one matches.  Most cards in Mexico feature several tag and trios matches with very few singles matches, much less and entire card of them.

Independent wrestlers has been hurt the most, most companies haven't run a show in over a month which means a month of not working.  Limitless Wrestling, my local promotion, at the end of March after having to cancel their March show ran a taping at the Limitless Dojo.  From what I understand they taped 31 matches to air weekly in IWTV, a limited series show call Pandemic at the Dojo.  Four episodes have aired to date and they are well worth you time to watch them.

Basic Becca ready for action at the Limitless Dojo
I don't know when this is all going to be over and when we are going to be able to get back to going to wrestling shows.  At this point I'm thinking we would be lucky if we could be able to attend a show in June.  Limitless has already had to cancel two shows, most likely their May show as well.  Mikey and I had tickets to the AEW show in Boston scheduled for April 15th and that has been postponed to August 5th.

The only thing I know for sure is at that first Limitless show back, after the fans lose their mind for Rich Palladino coming to the ring, the first wrestler introduced is going to get the biggest pop they've ever heard as we all can't wait to get back to the matches.

Random Wrestling: El Terrible

This past Friday, June 23rd, I attended Ring of Honor's Best in the World pay-per-view in Lowell, Mass.  You can read about it here. At the show two wrestlers from Mexico's CMLL were featured in a tag team match: Ultimo Guerrero and El Terrible.

Ultimo Guerrero followed by El Terrible from ROH Best in the World, I took this photo
I had heard of both of these wrestlers before and had seen a few of their matches but those were primarily lucha libre style six man tags and those are a far cry different from a tag team match and especially a singles match.

I was blown away by both of these Mexican veterans, but I was mostly impressed with El Terrible especially how the slapped the the crap out of Vinny Marseglia in the corner.  Unreal!

El Terrible with side headlock on Vinny Marseglia from ROH Best in the World, I took this photo
El Terrible debuted in 1992 as the masked El Engerdro del Mal (The Bad Boy) for independents in the Monterrey, Mexico area.  In 2002 he joined up with CMLL still under a mask this time going by Damian El Terrible as a techinco.  At some point he dropped Damien from his name now calling himself just El Terrible.

Masked as El Engendro del Mal on the right
In 2004 he became a rudo eventually joining Perro Aguayo's La Furia Del Norte stable.  He would later join Los Perro's de Mal before an eye injury in Puerto Rico sidelined him.  In late 2011 Perro would leave CMLL forming his own promotion  however, Terrible stayed withe CMLL.

In 2009 he teamed with El Texano Jr feuding with No Limit: Naito & Yujiro in both CMLL in Mexico and NJPW in Japan.  Their feud culminated in a hair vs. hair match at Sin Salida on December 4, 2009 that saw the team of No Limit get their heads shaved.

Rush on the left El Terrible on the right
On January 1, 2012 Terrible defeated Rush at a house show in Mexico City to win the vacant CMLL World Heavyweight Championship.  He would go on to hold the title an impressive 1,125 days before losing it January 30, 2015 to Maximo in Mexico City at the Super Viernes event.

He held the CMLL World Trios Championships with partners Hector Garza & Tarzan Boy as La Furia del Norte for 666 days from November 19, 2004 - September 16, 2006

While the reigning World Champion he was also held the CMLL World Tag Team Championship with Tama Tonga from November 13, 2012 - July 5, 2013.

He was a member of the Bullet Club off shoot stable Bullet Club Latinoamerica with La Comandante, Mephisto, Rey Bucanero, and Toma Tonga from 2013 - 2015.

You can find some great matches on YouTube including the hair vs hair match with No Limit: Yujiro Takahashi and Tetsuya Naito.

I'm not sure where, when, or how but I would like to see El Terrible in the ring again in the future.

Lucha Mexico review

The other day I stumbled across a new documentary on Netflix called Lucha Mexico.  The Netflix synopsis was simple: The documentary captures the colorful spectacle of Lucha Libre, a form of Mexican pro wrestling performed by masked superheroes and villians.  SOLD!

The film was released in 2016 with a theatrical tour and is available on DVD.  It has a run time of 1 hour 43 minutes and although there is some English in the film it is primarily in Spanish, what do you expect its about pro wrestling in Mexico, so make sure you turn your subtitles on.

Shocker
The bulk of the movie follows luchador Shocker but also features "Strongman" Jon Anderson, Blue Demon Jr, El Hijo Del Perro Aguayo, Fabian El Gitano, Tony Salazar, Faby Apache, Sexy Star, Kemonito, Damian 666, Halloween, Julio Cesar Rivera, and Giant Bernard, no Matt Bloom the head trainer of the WWE Performance Center.  The primary promotion featured is CMLL, Consejo Mundial De Lucha Libre the oldest wrestling promotion founded in 1933.  Other promotions such as AAA, NWA Mexico, Perros Del Mal, and other independents are also featured.

This documentary is the first that I am aware that really shows the depth of Lucha Libre with Shocker headlining shows for CMLL in the world famous Arena Mexico to tent shows at farmers markets in the rain.  We also get an abridged history of Lucha Libre with wrestlers talking about their fathers and older wrestlers talking about their time in the ring.  We get a peak at the CMLL training center at Arena Mexico.

The time frame of this movie is never specified however based on the matches and contents of the movie it was filmed over a five year period from Fall 2009 until Spring 2015.

Some incidents in the film that show the timeline are:

Fabian El Gitano was murdered in his home from blunt trauma to the head on March 18, 2011

Doctor X was murdered October 11, 2011

Hector Garza
Hector Garza passed away on May 26, 2013 from lung cancer.  At the time of his death he was the Mexican National Heavyweight Champion, the Mexico City Boxing and Wrestling Commission deemed the title inactive.  As of November 25, 2016 it remains inactive.

Perro Aguayo Jr died during a match March 20, 2015

There are a bunch of matches that I recognized luchadores in that I couldn't find when and where they took place.

I really enjoyed this documentary, I have watched it twice.  I'd like to see them do another one focusing other luchadores and  luchadoras as they have barely scratched the surface of the rich history of Lucha Libre.

Arena Mexico is only place I someday dream to go and watch an event.  I doubt it will ever happen but to see realy lucha libre in Mexico would amazing.

Wesley, First Matches, & WrestleMania

So it's been 8 days since my last post normally I don't plan on that much time between posts but I had a good reason this time, my son was born.  That's right Kate and I welcomed Wesley Rugen Labbe to the world on March 21st after a lengthy induced labor.  But you can read about that on my other blog Wicked Clevah Title.

Once we got home and important decision had to be made once that I do not take lightly.  That decision was what is the first wrestling match that I am going to watch with Wesley.  Now I realize that he will never remember watching it, but it's important to me.

With Canaan we watched the historic "I Quit" Match featuring Magnum TA vs. Tully Blanchard at Starrcade 1985.  This match is my all time favorite wrestling match.  Two phenomenal wrestlers in peak shape at the height of their feud putting everything that they had into this match.

With Addison we watched some Lucha Libre women's action featuring Marcela then some Joshi with Ayako Hamada. Historically women's wrestling in the United States has been treated as a side attraction and not that of a serious contest while in Japan and Mexico it has always been treated with reverence.

For Wesley I decided to go with one of my all time favorite wrestlers, a match that was supposed to be his last, and one that I attended live.  WrestleMania XXIV March 30, 2008 Orlando, FL "Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels vs. "Nature Boy" Ric Flair.  When that was over I put on Clash of the Champions XXVII from November 19, 1991.

WrestleMania XXXI is this coming Sunday and it's shaping up to be a decent card.  Undertaker vs. Bray Wyatt, Brock Lesnar defending the WWE Championship against Roman Reigns, and Intercontinental Championship Ladder match, that is basically the return of Money in the Bank except this is for the Championship instead of the title match.   What I'm really looking forward to though is Sting's in ring WWE debut.  It's going to be so surreal to finally see him wrestling in a WWE Ring.  He is the last guy that was really big in WCW that has never wrestled in the WWE.

I don't think he will ever be around long enough to do so, but if he ever was able to get a reign as WWE Champion he would be the only guy in history to hold the NWA, WCW, TNA, & WWE Championships.

I mailed off a couple cards to be signed by Brian Myers aka Curt Hawkins.

I'm going to try to mail off a few more this week, haven't worked out who yet.
