The NWA Worlds Championship Reign of Tatsumi Fujinami

Tatsumi Fujinami a legendary Japanese professional wrestler who made his pro wrestling debut on May 9, 1971 and as of this post, 54 years later is still and active competitor in the ring at 71 years old with a dozen matches so far in 2025.

Among his numerous championships, he is a 6 time IWGP Heavyweight Champion, WWF World Junior Heavyweight Champion, WWF International Heavyweight Championship, 2015 WWE Hall of Fame inductee, and for 59 days in 1991 he was the recognized NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion.

To tell this story though, we need to go back to November 1988 when Ted Turner purchased Jim Crockett Promotions forming WCW: World Championship Wrestling.  JCP was an affiliate of the NWA and recognized the NWA Championships, WCW did the same when they acquired JCP.

In their first steps to withdraw from the NWA, WCW decides to declare their own World Champion. On January 11, 1991 in East Rutherford, New Jersey, Ric Flair defeated then NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion Sting to not only win the NWA World Title but become the first WCW World Champion.

WCW did not have a physical belt to represent the WCW World Championship, instead doubles the Big Gold Belt as both the NWA and WCW championship.

March 21, 1991 WCW & New Japan Pro Wrestling promote a joint show at the Tokyo Dome where 64,500 fans watch the IWGP World Champion: Tatsumi Fujinami pin the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion: "Nature Boy" Ric Flair in the main event to capture the championship.

Flair's WCW World Championship was never announced as being on the line.  During the closing moments of the match referee Bill Alfonso was knocked out, during that time Fujinami threw Flair over the top rope, a disqualification at the time.  NJPW Referee Tiger Hattori ran in and counted the pinfall and declared Fujinami the champion.

During his post match press conference in the back, Flair barged in, took the physical belt and told Fujinami to come and get it.  In the United States WCW never recognized the title change stating that Fujinami was disqualified and that Flair was still the champion.  In Japan he was recognized at the NWA World Champion.

On May 19, 1991 WCW would hold their inaugural SuperBrawl PPV event in St. Petersburg, Florida featuring the rematch of Ric Flair vs. Tatsumi Fujinami.  During the build to the show WCW acknowledge there was controversy from their match in Japan and that at the end of the match we would know who the World Champion was.

During introductions ring announcer Gary Michael Cappetta stated the match was for the WCW World Championship.  Fujinami was announced as the IWGP Champion however he did not come out with the title.  Flair was announced at the WCW World Champion.  No-mention was made of the NWA World Championship.

For this match, Tiger Hattori was the assigned in-ring official while Bill Alphonso would be the official at ringside.  The finish came when Fujinami rolled up Flair in an O'Connor roll and on kick out Fujinami and Hattori collied heads.  Flair then rolled up Fujinami in a school boy and Alphonso jumped in the ring for the 3 count.  Cappetta announced Flair as still the WCW World Champion.  The NWA Officially recognized Flair as the new NWA Worlds Champion.

The NWA & WCW title lineages would separate for good on July 1, 1991 when Flair left WCW and was stripped of the WCW World Championship, they would declare a new champion and physical belt on July 14, 1991 when Lex Luger defeated Barry Windham in a cage at the Great American Bash.

The NWA would recognize Flair as the NWA World Champion until September 1991 when Flair made his WWF debut with the big gold belt declaring himself the real world's champion.

In the end, we got two outstanding matches between Flair and Fujinami and there appears to be an attempt at creating a good story with a controversial finish.  However, it seems neither side could agree on how they want to tell the story, so in the end we got, what we got.

However Fujinami is officially recognized as a former NWA Worlds Champion, holding the title for 59 days from March 21, 1991 - May 19, 1991.  He had only 1 defense, when he lost the title back to Flair.

January 4th at the Tokyo Dome

The history Tokyo Dome opened on March 17, 1988 and just over a year later on April 24, 1989 New Japan Pro Wrestling promoted the first wrestling event at the venue.  In 1992 NJPW began what would become an annual tradition as the Dome hosted the first January 4th show entitled Super Warriors in Tokyo Dome and saw IWGP Heavyweight Champion: Riki Choshu defeat Greatest 18 Club Champion: Tatsumi Fujinami to unify the titles.

For the last 33 years New Japan has transformed this annual show into their biggest show of the year.  2007 was the first year that it was called WrestleKingdom and that name has held ever since.

I've often talked about WrestleMania IV being the first time I watched WrestleMania live and I've never missed watching Mania live since then.  Since 2015 I have not missed a live WrestleKingdom or January 4th show.  In 2015, New Japan in a partnership with Jeff Jarrett WrestleKingdom 9 was available on PPV live in the United States.  From 2016 to today I have watched it on New Japan World.

From 2003 to 2014 I would find a bootleg copy of the show on VHS or DVD and later a torrent download.  In 2008 TNA Wrestling released the DVD Global Impact Japan which had 7 completed matches from the WrestleKingdom II that involved the TNA wrestlers. After getting New Japan World I went back and watched all of the January 4th show.

It's rather refreshing knowing that show is going to be held on the same day every year instead of waiting for the shows to be announced.  For instance WrestleMania's date has varied from as early as March 14th in 2004 and as late as April 20th in 2025.

Since 2015 if I am schedule to work I have taken a vacation day so I can watch the event live as it happens.  Spoilers were easier to avoid a decade ago, not so much today.  This year, 2025, January 4th fell on a Saturday, and because at 3am Eastern  Time, pre-show at 2am.  I got up at 2:45am and watched the event live, it was an excellent show overall, was very happy to see Zack Sabre Jr. retain his title in the main event.

I took a nap so I could be rested for Wrestle Dynasty, a joint show between with NJPW, ROH, AEW, CMLL, Stardom, & DDT PRO being represented, also taking place at the Tokyo Dome.  With the time difference, the Wrestle Dynasty Pre-show actually started at 10pm Eastern Time on January 4th! So after watching AEW Collision I switched over to New Japan World.  Wrestle Dynasty was a better show than Wrestle Kingdom this year.

I've long been a fan of New Japan Pro Wrestling their style and presentation and I enjoyed them much more than WWE.  Their partnership with Ring of Honor was the best part of ROH.  I was excited when AEW came along and their eventual partnership was New Japan made them even more appealing.  I like wrestling better that tell their stories in the ring and not with 30 minute talking segments.

Originally Wrestle Dynasty was supposed to mark New Japan's return to Madison Square Garden on August 22, 2020, but covid killed that.  My buddy Jay & I fully planned on going, but it was cancelled before tickets event went on sale.

I will always got to New Japan if I have the opportunity.  I do hope to one day be in attendance at the Tokyo Dome on a January 4th.

This was the pre-show Honor Rumble, the win was wasted on Kenny King.  VERY bad ass portion of this match was the Great Muta making his MSG debut.  He has stated in an Interview that he had always wanted to wrestle at Madison Square Garden.  He was a surprise entrant and the building erupted.

Who are the only 3 wrestlers to compete at Madison Square Garden, Wembley, Arena Mexico & The Tokyo Dome

There are only 3 wrestlers to have ever competed at Madison Square Garden, Wembley, Arena Mexico, and the Tokyo Dome.  I think everyone can guess who one of the is, but I think the other two will surprise you.

There have only ever been two shows at Wembley, and except for one show in 2019 only wrestlers in the WWE have competed at Madison Square Garden.  Arena Mexico is owned by CMLL and no other wrestling company has held a show at this venue.  The Tokyo Dome has hosted numerous wrestling shows from various promotions since it opened in 1988 with annual January 4th NJPW wrestling show held every year since 1992.

 Chris Jericho

The one that I feel everyone will guess would be Jericho.  He just competed at AEW's All In London at Wembley, spent years in the WWE and had recent big matches with New Japan at Wrestle Kingdom plus his exploits in Mexico well documented in his book.  His CMLL trading card is his official Rookie card, and is a highly sought after collectible.

Arena Mexico
April 23, 1993, CMLL
Ciclon Ramirez, Corazon de Leon, & Lazer Tron defeated Felino, Javier Cruz, & Titan

In this match Lazer Tron was portrayed by Hector Guerrero, the same gimmick he was using in Jim Crockett Promotions and other NWA territories.  This was also Jericho's debut match in Mexico.

Tokyo Dome
January 4, 1997, NJPW Wrestling World in Tokyo Dome 1997
Super Liger defeats Koji Kanemoto

The infamous Super Liger match where the costume was too small and the mask didn't quite fit and the match was very bad, ending the gimmick after just one appearance.  This was not Jericho's Japan debut but it was his NJPW debut.  He did a few tours of New Japan in 1997, one show in 1998 and didn't return to the promotion until after his WWE run in 2018.

Madison Square Garden
October 30, 1999, WWE House Show
The Rock defeated Chris Jericho

This was Jericho's 25th match with the WWE.  An interesting note, while researching this I discovered that Jericho's first every wrestling match in the WWE was a house show August 21, 1999 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada where he defeated the Big Boss Man in a Nightstick match.

Wembley
August 27, 2023, AEW All In London 2023
Will Osprey with Don Callis pinned Chris Jericho with Sammy Guevara

Not much to say about this one, it was a hell of a match and I would put this on the level of Rock vs. Hogan as far as it being a generational encounter.

Juice Robinson

What's interesting to note about Juice is that 3 of his 4 appearances have a connection to New Japan Pro Wrestling.  After touring the independents Juice signed with WWE in 2011 where he spent the next few years in the developmental never going to the main roster.  He entered New Japan in 2015 staying with them until signing with AEW in late 2022.

Arena Mexico
August 18, 2017 CMLL Super Viernes
Juice Robinson, Marco Corleone, & Matt Taven defeated Diamante Azul, Valiente, & Volador Jr.

Juice toured CMLL as part of their relationship with New Japan Pro Wrestling.  This was his debut match in Mexico and CMLL, Marco Corleone competed in WCW and WWE as Mark Jindrak.

Tokyo Dome
January 4, 2017 NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 11 in Tokyo Dome
Cody Rhodes pinned Juice Robinson

Juice has joined NJPW as a Young Lion by his own choice in 2015 and worked his way up the ranks to have this huge singles match with Cody in the Dome.  This was Cody's New Japan debut.

Madison Square Garden
April 6, 2019 ROH/NJPW G1 Supercard
New York Street Fight: Flip Gordon & Lifeblood: Juice Robinson & Mark Haskins defeated Bully Ray, Shane Taylor, & Silas Young

This is the only non WWE show to take place at Madison Square Garden since November 14, 1960.  I attended this sold out history making event!  This match doesn't stand out or resonate with me from this evening.  I'll have to go back and watch it.

Wembley
August 27, 2023, AEW All In London 2023
Bullet Club Gold: Jay White, Juice Robinson, & Konosuke Takeshita with Don Callis and The Gunns defeated The Golden Elite: Kenny Omega, Adam Page, & Kota Ibushi

This was an outstanding match, since the debut of AEW Collision on June 17th Juice has been on quite the tear in AEW looking the best he ever has.  He and Jay White have formed an outstanding tag team as well.

John Tenta

For me this is the name that shocked me the most on this list, Earthquake.  He got his start in Sumo wrestling and debuted in pro wrestling with All Japan Pro Wrestling in 1987 wrestling in the promotion for two years.  He made his WWF debut in 1989 as a plant in the crowd for a segment where Dino Bravo and The Ultimate Warrior did push ups with Tenta sitting on their backs, he attacked Warrior.  Tenta would retire from wrestling in 2003 with his final matches being where he started, for All Japan Pro Wrestling.

Arena Mexico
December 3, 1993, CMLL Super Viernes
John Tenta, Dr. Wagner Jr., & Pierroth Jr. defeated Corazon de Leon, El Rayo de Jalisco Jr. & Haku

Tenta left the WWF In January 1993 and would wrestle in the WAR promotion in Japan until he returned to the WWF in January 1994.  This match would be his only wrestling match in Mexico.

Tokyo Dome
March 30, 1991, SWS Wrestlefest in Tokyo Dome
John Tenta defeated Koji Kitao

This was a joint show with Tenryu's SWA: Super World of Sport & the WWF.  He wrestled as John Tenta and not Earthquake wrestled for years in Japan with All Japan before going to WWF.  Two days later on April 1st in Kobe they had their infamous shoot incident where Tenta would win by DQ.  I had always heard about that match, I didn't realize they worked a match two days before with no issue.

Madison Square Garden
February 19, 1990, WWF on MSG Network
Earthquake pinned Ronnie Garvin

Nothing special about this match, he had been with the promotion for 5 months at this point and I'm more surprised he hadn't compete sooner at MSG.

Wembley
August 29, 1992, WWF Summerslam 1992
WWF Tag Team Champions: The Natural Disasters: Earthquake & Typhoon defeated The Beverly Brothers: Beau & Blake Beverly

This show is more significant than this match.  It was the first WWE PPV held outside North America, but didn't air until 2 days after it was recorded.  This was just a mid card match that was adequate.  What everyone remembers is the Legion of Dooms entrance and the main event of Bret Hart vs Davey Boy Smith.

I bet you even forgot that Randy Savage defended the WWF Championship against the Ultimate Warrior on this card...they wrestled 28 minutes! This was their first match against each other since Warrior "ended" Savages Career at Wrestlemania VII in 1991.

I hope you found these random facts as interesting as I did, let me know!

Reflections of a 40 year old Wrestling Fan.

Back on June 24th I turned 40 years old and honestly I'm having a hard time with it.  Over the years I have I've picked up and put down a lot of interests and hobbies, some of them I just lose interest in and others I feel like I'm "too old" for.  One thing that I have never given a single thought to stop watching is professional wrestling.

My love of wrestling has never waned, in fact my passion for professional wrestling has grown over the years.  My collection of wrestling memorabilia and collection habits has changed tremendously though.  Beginning with getting my first job and driver's license at age 16 and until the majority of my collection was destroyed in a basement flood I collected everything and anything wrestling that I could get my hands on.  Side note, you can read about the flood and how it lead to me getting a tour of Titan Towers here: My Tour of Titan Towers.

My buddy Jay and I had a weekend route that we would take hitting up a half dozen flea markets, KB Toys, yards sales, and other places looking for anything wrestling.  After the flood wrecked everything I became a bit depressed and really thought what do I need with all this stuff anyhow.  At the end of the day no one cares about it besides me and the reason it was in the basement to begin with is because when we moved into this house I didn't have a space of my own to display it.  Before have kids I had a wrestling room where I stored it all, now I didn't have that.

My collection is much more scaled down and I'm a lot more selective about what I spend my money on.  Especially when it comes to wrestling figures, they are so damn expensive now!  The two things that I collect the most are my ticket stubs from events that I have attended and my signed trading cards.  I also have a large collection of wrestling related books and DVD's, however, my I don't buy nearly as many DVD's as I used to.  I like to buy wrestling documentaries over full events.

My favorite time of wrestling to watch is the mid 1980's Jim Crockett Promotions / NWA at the height of the Horsemen.  There is just something about the style of wrestling that appeals to me the most.  My buddy Jay and I over the last 25 years frequently talked about how great it would have been to go to a Jim Crockett Promotions / NWA event or an AWA show.  Sadly we never made the journey to see the original ECW, a regret.  Hell it took us 24 years to go to finally go to Madison Square Garden.

I do feel fortunate though that I was able to attend two WCW shows in the late 1990's.  Nitro in Boston on June 9, 1997 and a WCW Saturday Night taping in Portland, Maine on May 19, 1998.  I've also attended two TNA shows first on June 24, 2007 at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom in New Hampshire and then on December 4, 2009 in Portland, Maine.  In the last three years I've attended four Ring of Honor shows, two Pay Per Views which I had front row for, and two house shows including their debut in Maine.  I also attended the NJPW & ROH G1 Supercard at Madison Square Garden.  I'm not sure how other people feel about it but I really like going to shows from different promotions.

On the WWE side of things I've been to a few dozen events including 6 PPV's, WrestleMania 14 & 24,  Backlash 2005, SummerSlam 2006, Survivor Series 2008, & Royal Rumble 2011.  Also a five hour WWF TV taping in 1995, and Monday Night Raw in 2005.  Also a WW-ECW house show when they first relaunched as their own brand.  I haven't been to a Smackdown TV taping by I'm not sure that matters. I'd like to go to an NXT show someday.

At this point in my wrestling fandom I still have a list of wrestling events, wrestlers, promotions, and venues that I want to go to and see.  Some of them are more realistic than others but here goes:

Go to a show in another country, to expand on this I also want to attend any Lucha Libre show in Mexico. I'm spending 4 nights outside Ottawa, Ontario, Canada this September and I'm hoping to check this one off

A lot of historic wrestling buildings like The Omni & The Sportatorium have been demolished.  Others like the Greensboro Coliseum and Cow Palace no longer run wrestling shows with regularity. Venues I'd like to see a show at include: ECW Arena, Maple Leaf Gardens (now Mattamy Athletic Centre) and the Hamburg Fieldhouse & Mid-Hudson Civic Center where WWF taped their television shows.  Pipe dream venues are the Tokyo Dome, Korakuen Hall, and Arena Mexico.

Promotions and events I want to go to include: an official NWA show, Chikara's King of Trios, any PWG show but Battle of Los Angeles specifically, Progress Wrestling, CZW Tournament of Death, and others.

The list of wrestlers I want to see wrestle live that I haven't is huge but there are some more than others including: The Rock n' Roll Express (this door is closing), British Strong Style, Toni Storm, Jimmy Havoc, The Von Erichs, Rickey Shane Page, Josh Alexander, Christi Jaynes, and so many more.

So far I have been to 240 wrestling events in 11 different states.  I once had considered trying to go to a show in every state but that would be very expensive, so now if it works out then it works out.  For those wondering its Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, & Florida.

I've seen a lot in wrestling over the years and I feel very fortunate for the shows I have been to and the places I have been.  As you can see there is so much more that I want to see and experience.

Talking to my friends our next big wrestling trip is going to the ECW Arena.  A couple times a year they have a wrestling convention during the day and a wrestling show in the evening. That is what we are looking at doing as it makes the trip there worth it.

Wrestle Kingdom 13

It's finally here, Wrestle Kingdom 13 from the Tokyo Dome live at 2 am eastern.  Instead of the New Japan Rumble, the opening is a six man tag gauntlet match to be declared the number 1 contenders for the Never Openweight Six Man Tag team championships, that match to take place at New Years Dash on January 5th.

My buddy Bradford chimed in some thoughts that I thought I would share, they are italicized.

Commentators: Kevin Kelly, Don Callis, & Chris Charlton

For this match they used the side entrance and not the main entrance.

Marty Scurll, Hangman Page, & Yujiro Takahashi with Chase Owens vs. Jeff Cobb, Dave Finlay, & Yuji Nagata.  Nagata replacing injured Michael Elgin

Chase was holding Finlay and was struck by Page after Finlay moved.  Yujiro pushed Page, Page pushed him back and Yujiro was rolled up for the three count by Finaly.  Post match Chase and Yujiro has words with Page and they walked out leaving Page and Scrull in the ring.  Chase and Yujiro have kind of been lost in the shuffle with them apparently leaving Bullet Club but never officially joining Elite.

Hiroki Goto, Chuckie T, & Trent Beretta vs. Jeff Cobb, Dave Finlay, & Yuji Nagata

Really solid and fast paced six man tag team match.  Finlay got the pin with a school boy after Chuckie T missed a moonsault.

Minoru Suzuki, Killer Elite Squad: Davey Boy Smith Jr & Lance Archer vs. Jeff Cobb, Dave Finlay, & Yuji Nagata

Fast match with Suzuki Gun jump starting the bell but not all over the floor.  KES pinned Finlay after the Killer Bomb.

Minoru Suzuki, Killer Elite Squad: Davey Boy Smith Jr & Lance Archer vs. Taguchi, Makabe, & Toru Yano

Suzuki Gun jumped them in the aisle on the ay to the ring.  But it quickly went back into the ring.  Another really good match, lots of fast paced action.  Finish came when Yano low blowed Smith and pinned him with a school boy.  Suzuki beat up some young boys after the match with a chair.

This means that tomorrow Taguchi, Makabe, & Toru Yano will challenge for the titles.  This was a good match but I like the New Japan Rumble better.

Main Show

Never Openweight Champion: Kota Ibushi vs. Will Ospreay

Really good match!  Lots of fast paced action with multiple reversals.  A couple very cool moments, Ibushi is tied up in the tree of woe and Osprey just sits on the mat in front of him and slaps him in the face.  Then when reversing a top rope move he hits his face on the ring post and apparently breaks his nose.  Osprey wins the title with stormbreaker.  Decent but honestly not as good as I though it would be.  They didn't do as much high flying as I thought they would.  Good finishing sequence though.  Ibushi did a stretcher job, which is unusual for New Japan.  Ibushi was champion for 26 days.

Winner: Will Ospreay - new champion

Bradford: Ospreay / Ibushi focused on strikes and speed instead of flying because f'ing Walter injured Ospreay, meaning he had to alter the way he wrestles.

IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions: Kanemaru & El Desperado vs. Roppongi 3k: Sho & Yoh with Rocky Romero vs. LIJ: Bushi & Shingo Takagi

Apparently this is a tornado style one fall to a finish match, however, there can only be two legal competitors at a time?!?  Ok that's odd.  Very good match lots of action, once Shingo tagged in be pretty much dominated.  Takagi pinned Sho with last of the dragon for LIJ to capture the Junior Tag Titles.  Kanemaru and El Desperado were champs for a long 304 days.

I don't understand how they think Shingo is a believable junior, he's clearly not.

Winners: LIJ: Bushi & Shingo Takagi - new champions

RevPro British Heavyweight Championship: Tomohiro Ishii vs. Zack Sabre Jr. with Taka

What's cool about this is the winner gets a new belt and the old one is retired and they have a RevPro referee Chris Roberts to officiate.  I really enjoy these little extras.

These two went right at it when the bell rang a Zack said he was going to submit him in 60 seconds.  He didn't succeed but he really worked over his arms in that way that Sabre can do.  Sabre goes from an attempted Arm bar into an ankle lock!  That finish with Zabre tying up both of his arms and kicking him in the head....just damn!  He calls it: "Hurray! Another year, surely this one will be better than the last; the inexorable march of progress will lead us all to happiness." Ishii was champion for 82 days.

Winner: Zack Sabe Jr. - new champion

IWGP Heavyweight Championship" Guerrillas of Destiny : Tama Tonga & Tonga Loa with Bad Luck Fale & Jado vs. The Young Bucks: Nick & Matt Jackson vs. LIJ: Evil & Sanada

Starts with Matt and Tama in the ring, Evil tagged in when Tama was doing his I'm a good guy shake my hand bit.  Evil then bodyslammed and hit a long distance running clothesline on Matt and his sold the back that he injured last year at Wrestle Kingdom.  Tama Tonga is apparently trying to be a good guy, based on his promo at Fanfest on the 3rd.

A lot of crazy super fast offense with frequent tags.  We got a tower of doom and then Nick, who was not involved hit a 450 splash on Sanada.  Finishing sequence was cool with multiple finishers hit until Sanada hit the moonsault on Matt Jackson for the pin.  I wonder if this is the last we'll see of the Young Bucks in NJPW, well maybe tomorrow too.  GOD held the titles for 96 days.

Winners: LIJ: Evil & Sanada - new champions

IWGP United States Champion: Cody with Brandi Rhodes vs. Juice Robinson

This match was just okay.  A alot of the typical Cody shenanigans until Brandi was kicked out.  Match wasn't very long, Juice pretty much dominated and got the pin after two pulp frictions.  Again makes me wonder if this is the last we'll see of Cody in NJPW.  Cody held the title for 96 days and this was his first defense.

Winner: Juice Robinson - new champion

Bradford: Juice is the first two time IWGP US Champion which would be cool if the title wasn't meaningless already.

IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion: Kushida vs. Taiji Ishimori

Excellent match!  Great combination of high flying and mat wrestling.  Ishimori does a lot of guys landing on his knees moves like the lung blower.  This maybe the match of the night so far.  Kushida held the title for 88 days.

Winner: Taiji Ishimori - new champion

Kazuchika Okada vs. "Switchblade" Jay White

We get the full Rainmaker entrance with his elaborate jacket and money raining in the dome and he's back to the short trunks from the pants.  Terrific match!  This really shows how good Okada is and how good Jay White is going to be.  Unbelievable finishing sequence that I could do no justice to describe.  Reversal after reversal, Okada hitting his dropkick and a partial rainmaker.  Then going for it again and Jay White reversing it into blade runner for the pin.  Fantastic!

Winner: Jay White

No Disqualification: IWGP Intercontinental Champion: Chris Jericho vs. Tetsuya Naito

Naito attacked Jericho from behind knocking him to the floor.  Naito hit a stiff and sick looking piledriver on the ramp entrance.  That looked frigging stiff.  Later Naito went for a dive through the ropes and Jericho hit him in the face with a kendo stick.  Taking to the floor they stood on the announcers table and Jericho DDT'd Naito who was stood straight up on the top of his head and you could hear the table break.

The action in the ring back intense, Jericho dominated for a spell and then Naito took over.  Jericho using his patented moves like the lionsault and walls of Jericho.  Naito using his signature moves just a great match!  Probably Jerichos best in New Japan on this run.  Naito kicked out of the codebreaker! Jericho brought 8 chairs in the ring and went for a powerbomb, but Naito reversed it into and DDT, then hit a codebreaker of his own for a two count.  Jericho kicked out of Destino, then hit a low blow on Naito, went to stinger splash Naito but ate the turnbuckless corner steel.  Naito hit Jericho with the belt and a second Destino for the pin.  Jericho assaulted a young boy on the way out.  Jericho held the title for 201 days with 1 defense.  I know it's his gimmick but I hate how Naito treats the championships.

Winner: Testuya Naito - new champion

IWGP World Heavyweight Champion: Kenny Omega vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi

Every title has changed hands tonight which makes me think that this one won't.  Kenny 's entrance great is pretty awesome! Omega is being seconded by The Young Bucks, perhaps for the last time.

This was a Kenny Omega match, it started slow and built to a tremendous crescendo when in almost 40 minutes Tanahashi hit the hi fly low for the three count and claim his 8th IWGP championship.  Omega was champion for 209 days with three defenses.  I did watch this whole match but was unable to take notes while watching it.  There were many great moments with both men taking punishment that had lasting effect on them during the match.  Tanahashi went for a hi fly low with Omega on a table on the floor and missed crashing through the table, it was a rough looking landing.  Omega showed a lot of cockiness during the match at times when he was in control.  The finishing sequence was excellent.

Winner: Hiroshi Tanahashi - new champion

Bradford:  I'll just say he isn't a fan - Mike

All in all I thought it was a very good show from beginning to end.  Surprisingly all the titles changed hands and we may have seen the last of Cody, Young Bucks, & Hangman Page at this show.  I was hoping that Omega would retain, I can't see him leaving New Japan except for saw AEW or the indies.  He's a wrestler that needs to a blank canvas to do his art and I don't see him getting that type of freedom in the WWE.

Some news that came out of Wrestle Kingdom are new shows announced for the year including two additional shows in the States.  February 2nd in Nashville adding to the shows in California and North Carolina the two days prior.  July 6th the GI kicks off in Dallas, Texas as the same arena that AXS tv owner Mark Cuban's Dallas Mavericks are based out of.

Also they are pushing The MSG show like it is their show and not a join ROH show which is odd as most of the time when New Japan talents works War of the Worlds or Global Wars they don't advertise them as New Japan shows, in fact New Japan doesn't list them on their schedule at all.

I gathered the photos used in this post from around the internet, NJPW Twitter Feed, ZSJ's Twitter, Jericho's Instagram.

Bradford:
All members of LIJ hold titles now, whereas Elite was swept, and Bullet Club up two big wins for Taiji and Jay White.  White will be the next big gaijin with Kenny probably leaving soon.

Somthing else I thought was interesting is that they mentioned Nakamura an unhealthy amount.  Sometimes they were reaching just to mention him.  Part of me wonders if he's coming home sometime soon.
