AEW Collision: April 17, 2025 BOSTON

After a wonderful weekend of watching professional wrestling I finally find myself with the time to write about attending AEW Collision at the MGM Music Hall Fenway in Boston, Massachusetts.

When AEW announced the double shows, Dynamite on the 16th and Collision on the 17th I was tempted to go to both, but Boston is a long drive and it's not feasible, plus work.  Ultimately I wanted to go to Collision on Thursday as I had never been to Collision before but have been to Dynamite numerous times before.  I thought it was going to be a taped Collision as it airs on Saturdays, and it would be perfect to watch it live as it's normal time slot conflicts with WrestleMania 41 Saturday, however leading up the event it was announced that it would air live on Thursday.

When tickets went on sale after looking over what was available on the presale I chose the Mezzanine box seats as the price point was the same as the front row of the mezzanine seating behind the boxes and the pictures looked good.  And boy where they ever!  More on that later.

I left the house at noon and picked up Mikey at his place, first stop was The Brook, the casino in Seabrook, NH he has a free slot play and Mikey likes to spin the reels.  After a quick pay window trip for him we drove to Encore just outside Boston where he had another free slot play, I wasted $20 myself at this stop.  However the main focus for me is that they have a Shake Shack and I love me a shack burger!  We don't have them in Maine.

I had prepaid for parking a couple months back on the Park whiz app, $25, parking at the same lot that night was $65 so if you ever go to Boston and you know in advance buy parking as far ahead of time as you can.  It was a short walk over to the MGM Music Hall at Fenway which we got in line about 6pm.

MGM Music Hall at Fenway opened in August 2022 and features the main floor and two elevates seating areas that can hold 5009 people for concerts.  My daughter and I attended Mitski in concert at this venue in February 2024.

Doors opened at 630pm and we headed to our seats, this is when we found out that our box seats had a special entrance where you had to show your ticket to get a wrist band, had a private bar with lounge area and bathrooms and our seats had table service.  There were 4 seats in the boxes and can move around and are quite comfortable.

As you can see from the images we had an amazing view and I would not hesitate to sit here again for any show at this venue in the future.

Before the live Collision, we had two Ring of Honor matches, then 7 matches on Collision and no post live show matches.  I was really hoping for an FTR match because they typically on wrestle on Collision and they are my favorite tag team, but alas they were on a "one week suspension" for their actions on the last episode of Collision.

Ring of Honor Taping:

The Frat House: Griff Garrison & Cole Carter with Preston Vance and Jacked Jameson defeated the Spanish Announce Project: Serpentico and Angelico

8 Man Tag: Mark Briscoe, AR Fox, and Top Flight: Darius & Dante Martin with Leila Gray defeated Shane Taylor Promotions: Shane Taylor, ROH Pure Champion: Lee Moriarty, and The Infantry: Sean Dean & Charlie Bravo

AEW Collision Live

Kevin Knight pinned Lance Archer with Don Callis

NEVER Openweight Champion: Konosuke Takeshita & Josh Alexander defeated Tomohiro Ishii and Rocky Romero when Romero turned on Ishii

Post match: Trent made his return, he and Rocky joined the Don Callis Family and attacked Ishii with a wrench

2 on 1 Handicap Match: Megan Bayne with Penelope Ford defeated Ashley Vox and Rebecca Scott pinning both at once

Open Challenge: TNT Champion: Adam Cole pinned Claudio Castagnoli

La Faccion Ingobernable: Rush, Dralistico, & The Beast Mortos defeated Kevin Mathews, LSG, & Rosario Grillo

Nick Wayne pinned ROH World Television Champion: Komander with Alex Abrahantes to win the Championship

Kris Statlander & Julia Hart defeated TBS Champion, New Japan Strong Women's Champion, and RevPro Undisputed British Women's Champion: Mercedes Mone and Harley Cameron with Statlander pinned Cameron

Post show Mercedes Mone cut a promo about being in Boston.  Harley Cameron then bought out her pupped Mini Mone and entertained the crowd. No Tony Khan appearance tonight at all.

After the show I bought an AEW Collision logo shirt and enamel pin at the merchandise table.  I don't need a new t-shirt but I just really like the simple design.  We hit the road after stopping at the 7-11 in Saugus, MA for a big gulp and stopped again at the Circle K in Kittery, ME to fuel up and grab a monster peach tea.  I got home just before 2am, another successful wrestling adventure.

I have no regrets going on Thursday and not Wednesday, even though Wednesday had Osprey vs. Takeshita.  We got some great wrestling matches, and a title change when Nick Wayne won his first major singles championship.

In the tag team match, Ishii and Takeshita squared off, and during a shoulder tackle I have never heard two people slam into each other that hard and no sell it that I can think of.  Smack from the impact was wild!!!

I can't imagine I'll see AEW live again this year, but rumor has it that ROH Final Battle will be Massachusetts this December.  I've also heard rumors of TNA running Bound For Glory in Lowell, MA in October, and WWE running John Cena's Last Match December 27th at TD Garden in Boston with a PLE called Ruthless Aggression.

Some potential cools shows at the end of the year.

Raw the Netflix Era thoughts

I've been a fan of wrestling and the WWF / WWE my entire life.  I don't have a memory of the first time I watched wrestling, my Dad was a fan and so I have always watched.  My first live wrestling show was June 4, 1989 at the then Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Maine.  In the main event "Macho Man" Randy Savage with Sensational Sherri defeated WWF World Champion Hulk Hogan by count-out.

Unlike many my of my friends growing up I never waivered in my fandom of Professional Wrestling.  I've always had collection of wrestling memorabilia, t-shirts, and once I got my license going to live shows, even traveling out of State to attend them.  I've been to the big 4 WWE PPV's, WCW shows, TNA, Ring of Honor, AEW, New Japan Pro Wrestling and numerous Indies.

From the 1980's to today I've watched all the wrestling on TV that I could find, traded tapes back in the day to get wrestling from Japan and Mexico, and at technology has progress streamed my wrestling.  Today we have the capability to watch more wrestling live from around the world than ever before.

Through all of this I have been a fan of the WWF/WWE, was a day 1 subscriber of the WWE Network and subscribe to Peacock now.  While WWE has not always been my favorite flavor of wrestling to watch, I still watched.

However these last few years their weekly television show have become unwatchable to me.  Smackdown would have moments of greatness but Raw, each time I try I'm disappointed. Their format of their show has become to cater to the casual fan, I don't care about 20 minute promos, and long talking segments, I just want to watching wrestling matches.  The bell to bell in the ring action is what I care about.

I was hyped for the Netflix launch of Raw on January 6, 2025, advertised a WrestleMania caliber show, and for me it was not.  There were 4 matches on the show that ran just over 3 hours and total in ring time was 62 minutes and 28 seconds.  That leaves two hours of commercials, showing celebrities in the crowd and talking segments.  From the end of the women's title match it was 25 minutes before the Drew McIntyre vs. Jey Uso match started, and after 2 minutes they went to a commercial break.

What's so frustrating and discouraging to me is the promotion I have loved my whole life I can't stomach watching any longer.  I have friends that LOVE the product and think every show is amazing, and I guess good for them, but I can't see how they like it so much.

I will continue to follow what is happening on Raw & Smackdown, watch clips and select matches that I'm interested, and I will watch the "Premium Live Events" because that is where the best matches usually take place even those tend to frustrate me with their long segments between matches.

I'm just not the WWE's primary demographic any longer.  Thankfully for me my choices for alternative wrestling is practically endless.  Not to mention, I can always go back and watch the extensive history of wrestling and classic matches I have access to.

Other Promotions Running Madison Square Garden

When I was a kid I watched all the wrestling that I could, I still do we just have way more access today than in the 1980's.  Growing up in the Maine my primary promotion was the WWF and watching the TV shows or the Coliseum Home Video releases the commentators always drilled home that Madison Square Garden was the greatest sports arena in the world where all the biggest matches and moments happened.  I always wanted to got to MSG for a show, my buddy Jay and I talked about it for years and finally we did it in 2018.  You can read about that trip here.

As a kid only the WWF ran shows at Madison Square Garden and as I got older I learned of the exclusive deal the WWF and The McMahon family had as the wrestling promoters of MSG.  It apparently when back decades through different version of Madison Square Garden.

There have been 4 versions of Madison Square Garden, the first operated from 1879 to 1890, the second 1890 to 1925, the third 1925 to 1968 and the current version opened February 11, 1968.  The first wrestling card promoted at a Madison Square Garden was on November 24, 1875.

Roderick "Jess" McMahon had been promoting wrestling since 1915 and became the first McMahon to promote wrestling at the Garden in 1925 at the 3rd incarnation.  He would later partner with Toots Mondt running shows at MSG, and his son Vince J. McMahon would take over for his father in 1957 partnering with Mondt to promote shows.

Other promoters ran the Garden the McMahon and Mondt's Capital Wrestling Corporation would become the sole promoters in 1961.

Jack Pfefer & Pedro Martinez promoted at MSG and their show on November 14, 1960 would be the final show promoted at the venue until 2019 that did not have the name McMahon attached to the promotion.

Tony Marino defeated Miguel Torres
Red Grupe defeated Swede Hanson
Dixie Rebels: #1 & #2 (Mario Galento & Jerry Miller) defeated Luther Lindsay & Mr. Puerto Rico
Haystack Muldoon pinned Pampero Firpo
Bavarian Boys: Rudy Jacobs & Harry Wenzel defeated P.Y. Chong & Larry Simon
Karl Gotch defeated Jerry Graham by disqualification
Ricki Starr & Miguel Perez defeated The Fargo's: Jackie Fargo & Sonny Fargo
Bruno Sammartino wrestled Antonino Rocca to a 34:00 curfew draw

This was the last non-McMahon Family, WWWF / WWF / WWE show to be promoted at Madison Square Garden.  From 1963 through 1988 the WWE ran monthly shows at the Garden  until national expansion took their tour across the world.  1989 - 1991 averaged 8 shows a year and over the next several years the numbers would continue to decline to 2 shows in 2005.  Citing the rising costs and fees of running the Garden WWE would run just 1 show a year, typically the annual post Christmas house show which began in 2011.

This is why MSG management ended their exclusivity deal with the WWE, as WWE was still running upwards of a dozen shows a year in New York City, just not at the Garden.  This opened the door for other promotions to run The World's Most Famous Arena.  In June 2018 New Japan Pro Wrestling and Ring of Honor announced the G1 Supercard to be held April 6, 2019.

This date coincided with WrestleMania weekend with Mania being held at the Meadowlands and other WWE shows in the surrounding area with nothing booked at MSG.  My friends and I bought tickets in July 2018 when they went on sale and were Garden bound for the first non WWE show to be held at the venue in 59 years.  The show sold out within 16 minutes of the general on sale time.

It was a stacked card, however we all felt that the ROH portion was not as good as the New Japan portion of the show.

Dark Match
Oedo Tai: Kagetsu and Hazuki, & Jenny Rose defeated Hana Kimura, Sumie Sakai, & Stella Grey

Pre-Show
Honor Rumble: Kenny King won outlasting: Minoru Suzuki, Cheeseburger, Beer City Bruiser, Sho, Shingo Takagi, Bushi, Yoh, Shaheem Ali, Rhett Titus, LSG, Ryusuke Taguchi, Will Ferrara, Chase Owens, Rocky Romero, Brian Milonas, Bad Luck Fale, Jonathan Gresham, Tracy Williams, Yoshi Hashi, PJ Black, Jushin Thunder Liger, TK O’Ryan, Vinny Marseglia, Delirious, Tomohiro Ishii, Toru Yano, Colt Cabana, Hirooki Goto, King Haku, The Great Muta.

Rush defeated Dalton Castle with The Boys in 15 seconds, post match Castle beat up The Boys

While we were in New York City for Mania weekend Lucha Libre AAA held a press conference at Madison Square Garden that we attended announcing a show to take place September 15, 2019 on the main floor of MSG. However after poor ticket sales the show was moved the smaller Theatre at Madison Square Garden and it became a joint show with IMPACT Wrestling.  During the press conference AAA CEO Dorian Pena talked about the July 24, 1994 show that AAA ran at the then called Paramount theatre and how excited they were to run the main floor.

Although located inside the MSG complex this is not The Garden.  Originally called Felt Forum when it opened in 1968 when the Garden was sold out the overflow would watch the show via closed circuit in the Felt Forum.  The name of the venue changed names many times over the years to what is is called now.

AAA was not the first wrestling promotion to run a show in smaller venue under the main floor of MSG.  WCW: World Championship Wrestling held two shows there, the first April 13, 1993 and the second on June 30, 1996.  NXT held one event in the venue on November 16, 2016.

On October 27, 2009 Hulk Hogan held a press conference at Madison Square Garden to announce the release of his new book, and representatives from TNA Wrestling were on hand to sign Hogan to a full time contract with the promotion.

After the G1 Supercard, WWE increased their presence at the Garden running both Raw & Smackdown live TV from MSG, the same week as the AAA card, and post pandemic have run TV and House Shows at the Garden.

Speaking of the Pandemic, prior to the world shutting down in 2020 at Wrestle Kingdom 14 January 4, 2020 NJPW announced their return to MSG with Wrestle Dynasty!  The show was cancelled and has not been rescheduled.

IndyMania: My Wrestling Vacation Part 3

Saturday April 6th we slept getting up at seven am to start our day.  It was a gorgeous morning walk to the subway station unlike last yesterday where it rained all day with a high of 43 degrees.  Today was sunshine and clear skies hitting the lower 70's.

We got to the convention hall about 8:30 am just in time for the Ohio Valley Wrestling press conference announcing the Al Snow Wrestling Academy Combine coming this June.

Once again when doors open people were able to file in at a quick pace.  Mikey and Jay headed off to who they needed to see and I found myself only needing to meet Christian, my final presale.  I got him to sign a Japanese card of him and Edge as The Canadian Rockies.  He commented that he didn't see that card often at all.

I went down the the Rhinelader room and saw Magnum TA sitting at his table with no line so I went up to thank him and to tell him how much I love his match with Tully Blanchard from Starrcade 1985 the infamous I Quit steel cage match.  While there I saw he had a stack of what looked like a trading card based on the 1982 - 1983 Wrestling All Stars set, the back of it was blank.  I bought the card and had him sign it.  Check out my post about the card here.

I left the hotel looking for a instant photo machine, which the concierge told me was just down the street.  I headed down the road and it was even nicer outside looking for the Duane Reade pharmacy, which I saw across the street.  Entering the pharmacy I didn't see a photo machine and when I asked the clerk she pointed out the window saying, "We don't have one but the Duane Reade across the street does."  Yup.  So I crossed back over and went in where for $4 I was able to print and 8 x 10 of Faby Apache and I from Friday.  It came out nice.

I headed back to the convention getting my picture signed by Faby and she took another photo with me.  She remembered me and thanked me again for the cards and letter.

I met Jay and Mikey in the grand ballroom for Wrestling Revolver's Pancakes and Piledriver's III with a bell time of eleven am.  Before the show I bought cards from Sawyer Fulton and Dave Crist and got cards signed by Chris Brookes, Adam Brooks, and Sammy Guevara.  I even made Guevara's Vlog in a montage of him signing for fans.

The show started a little late to accommodate the 1200 fans that needed to file into the ballroom.  We had front row once again for this show, in the same section as both shows yesterday, just different seats.

There were nine matches on the card but featured 50 wrestlers on the show!  The best match on the card and the one of the best matches of the weekend was Ricky Shane Page vs. Tessa Blanchard.  It went on second to last and stole the damn show!  I cannot say enough good about this match!

This was my first time seeing RSP in person, I love his entrance and his balance on the top rope is crazy good! You could tell that he led this match and he did a phenomenal job.  The match told a great story and featured Tessa giving RSP a Canadian Destroyer off the top rope!!

They had a Hoss fight and it was cool to see Ace Romero on the show.  Jessicka Havok entered herself and took a wicked beating including a top rope splash from winner Jacob Fatu.  She is one tough lady.

Main event featured Shane Strickland's final match on the indies as he has signed with NXT.  Here is the rest of the card:

After the show I stopped to tell RSP how awesome his match was.  Mikey and Jay hit the convention to meeting a few more wrestlers before we headed out around three.  Once outside there was a Tartan Parade that featured some really good bagpipe music.

We stopped at Shake Shack one last time and along with my burger we had some of their chicken nuggets which are amazing!  The place was packed to the gills and we were lucky to find a table.

We ended up being able to rest up at the room for about an hour before heading out to Madison Square Garden, the reason this trip was thought of the begin with.  Mikey had never been before so we made sure to stop on the main concourse to show him the WrestleMania I display.

Just before the display the World Arm Wrestling League was setting up a booth and giving out free trading cards of their champion "Monster" Michael Todd who was accepting all challengers...I did not win.

Our seats were in the front row of the balcony and we had a good view, my only complaint is that my legs were a bit cramped.  Also the show itself from dark match to main event almost six hours, so we were sitting in our seats longer.  During the ladder match I had to get up and stretch my legs.  I was able to watch it from the concourse because they have bar seat openings.  For the main event I took my seat again.

The show opened with a women of honor six woman tag team match dark match that will probably be on the DVD release.  The pre-show featured the 30 man Honor Rumble battle royal and was included on the New Japan broadcast.

During the Honor Rumble we got a lot of New Japan talent that weren't on the main card including Jushin Thunder Liger, and Ishii and Suzuki squaring off with some stuff shots to each other.

A surprise entrance in King Haku, and a Delirious who rarely wrestles anymore and typically just on the Ring of Honor shows in Japan and the UK.  The biggest surprise of all was entrant number 30 THE GREAT MUTA!!  I legit lost my shit and am surprised I didn't explode my throat I yelled so loud.

I remember reading more than once over the years that the one thing Muta hasn't done in his career but wanted to was wrestle in Madison Square Garden.  When New Japan first announced the show in July 2018 Muta has just had double knee replacement surgery in May and I thought, I wonder if he'll try to get on the show in a tag match.

In the coming months he was announced to appear at House of Glory, then that he was wrestling in a six man tag, then he was appearing at WrestleCon.  I held on a hope that he just might appear at the Garden.  I don't know why I was so happy about it, but I just wanted Muta to check that box so badly.  We saw a lot of wrestlers make their garden debut on this night but the one that is the most exciting is that we saw the Madison Square Garden debut of The Great Muta.

Here is the entire card:

British Heavyweight Champion: Zack Sabre Jr with Taka Michinoku submitted Hiroshi Tanahashi
Kota Ibushi pinned IWGP Intercontinental Champion: Tetsuya Naito to win the championship
Ladder Match: Matt Taven defeated Marty Scrull & ROH World Champion: Jay Lethal to win the championship
Kazuchika Okada defeated IWGP Heavyweight Champion: Jay White with Gedo to win the championship for fifth time

The show really felt like it was two different shows in one, Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling.  And the ROH side of the card wasn't very good at all, except the ladder match.  The Woman of Honor title match was bad and the introduction of Angelina Love and Velvet Sky post match was meh.  Enzo and Cas jumping the rail in an apparent worked shoot was ridiculous and if you watch the show they aren't shown or even mentioned.  The street fight was just okay.

The New Japan half of the card was tremendous!  Ibushi vs. Naito was one of the best matches of the weekend.  Okada vs. Jay White was a classic Okada paced match, and we got to see the top two titles in New Japan change hands.

I really think that New Japan needs to distance themselves from Ring of Honor and do their North American expansion on their own.  I definitely think that they can do it on their own.

After the show we grabbed some slices at Bravo's, running it Flip Gordon, and headed back to the room.  I'm so glad that we got to see this historic card at Madison Square Garden, the first wrestling promoter to run a show at the world's most famous arena since 1960 that wasn't a McMahon.

I know Jay & I said this last year, but I really don't need to go back to the Garden anytime soon, unless I want to take my sons someday.  I happy going to indy shows and their intimate settings or going to WWE here in Maine.  I don't feel the need to go to huge arena shows.

The next morning we took the train back to Providence where Amy picked us up.  We stopped on the way back picking up big sandwich fixings and other snacks.  Back at Jay's we watched more of Takeover until the WrestleMania preshow started.  We made big sandwiches, they were excellent!  We took in WrestleMania from his couch and it was perfect.

Jay wasn't feeling well so he went to bed early with Amy, Mikey and I stayed up and watched all of Mania, I dozed off during the main event but caught the finish.  All in all it was a very good WrestleMania card.

Monday morning Mikey and I headed back north, it rained heavily most of the way and once we got back into Maine it turned to snow and the roads got pretty bad to closer to Gardiner that we got.  We stopped on the way home in Mass to get Kate a Jimmy John's and we passed time during the driving recording a podcast about the weekend.  You can download it here: Our Indy Mania Weekend!

I'm going to make one more post that summarizes the week with my favorite moments, matches, and highlights.
