Looking back at April

Hello readers of the Wrestling Insomniac

Some of you may have noticed that I, Michael Labbe, have not posted anything this month on the blog and there's a good reason for it.  I had a minor surgery that developed a major infection that was followed by a second surgery and essentially took me out of action from almost everything in life for a month.

I want to thank Brandon for keeping the page running with some fantastic articles where he have his thoughts on Ring of Honor Supercard of Honor XII and Impact's Redemption PPV.  He also reviewed a couple books by Shawn Michaels and Bill Apter, gave us his thoughts on the excellent Magnum TA documentary, he took us back in time looking at wrestler and actor Luca Brasi, and shared his WrestleMania 27 Weekend experience.

The only thing I really could do was lay down so I got plenty of television and reading in and I'd like to share some of that with you:

I've been reading Bob Backlund's book and I'm loving it.  Growing up I didn't know very much about Mr. Backlund's first run as the WWF Champion.  The only footage I remember seeing is him winning and losing the championship.  The rest of his almost six year run was a mystery to me.  This book answers those questions and  I'll do a proper write up when I'm done.

Sadly we lost three wrestling in greats in April, "Mr. Number 1" Paul Jones, "Luscious" Johnny Valiant and the legendary Bruno Sammartino.  Ever since Bruno and the WWE settled their differences I have been waiting for a DVD release looking at Bruno's life and career and it never happened.

After his death the WWE released a special on the Network about Bruno and it is fantastic.  It's a shame it took him dying for it to happened, but nonetheless everyone who is a fan of wrestling should take the time to sit and watch this.  Coupled with the Bruno Sammartino collection on the network you can also take in some of his greatest matches.

The Andre the Giant documentary debuted on HBO and I can't say enough positive about it.  Sincerely go out of your way to watch this.  Interviews with wrestling legends, his family, and cast from The Princess Bride you won't regret it.  I was blown away by the footage they had of a teenage Andre who was quite thin where it appeared he was going through some wrestling drills.

WrestleMania weekend is in April and even in my uncomfortable condition I took in the showcase of the immortals.  The Hall of Fame was just okay for me.

NXT Takeover was excellent!  The show was bookended by two phenomenal matches in the North American Championship ladder match and the grudge match between Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano.

Ciampa coming to the ring with no music allowed you to really be able to appreciate the amount of heat he had with the crowd, just fantastic.  This must see match saw these two go to war and tell an amazing story along the way earning the 5 star recognition that The Wrestling Observer gave it.

WrestleMania 34 was the best in Mania in years from beginning to end.  Fourteen matches total and a run time of seven hours with the pre-show it was a long day.  The pre-show matches were okay at best, however the main card itself was excellent.

I think what I liked the most was how it wasn't predictable.  Asuka lost her first match in the WWE system, Nakamura lost and turned heel, and Brock Lesnar retained his championship.  Also how The Undertaker squashing John Cena was exactly what needed to happen to make Taker look strong.  Finally I really dug Cena sitting in the crowd and his interactions with the fans.

I wasn't sure how I would feel about the Shinsuke Nakamura heel turn, but it has been amazing!  From his "clearly disingenuous" comments about AJ Styles to his "no speak English" and all his in ring antics have been spectacular.

On April 27th the WWE presented the Greatest Royal Rumble from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and love or hate the WWE you can't discount how unbelievable a feet it was to put on that show.  It was a hot crowd who was clearly up to date on the current storylines and wrestlers.  The opening match of John Cena vs. Triple H was basic but really really good.

Once again I was surprised when Brock Lesnar walked away with the championship after his cage match with Roman Reigns.  Daniel Bryans performance was unprecedented in the rumble match.  However what stands out as the moment of the night was Titus O'Neil falling on his way to the ring and sliding under the ring.  It was amazing!

New Japan Pro Wrestling opened the month with Sakura Genesis 2018 on April 1st in Tokyo headlined by IWGP Champion Kazuchika Okada successfully defending his championship against New Japan Cup winner Zack Sabre Jr.

However the match of the night rated 5 stars by Dave Melzter was Will Osprey retaining his IWGP Jr. Junior Heavyweight Championship against Marty Scrull in a phenomenal match!

They closed the month on April 29th when they presented Wrestling Hi No Kuni in Kumamoto.  In the main event Tetsuya Naito defeated Minoru Suzuki to regain the IWGP Intercontinental Championship for his second reign.

It was another good month of wrestling, and I'm glad to be back to sharing my enjoyment with all of you.

Pro Wrestling Illustrated 1975 Match of the Year

I was surfing around on Wikipedia the other day and I don't recall how I ended up on the page but I ended up on the list of PWI Matches of the Year.  As I'm looking at the list there are several matches I recall watching and I agree with the listings. However one jumped out at me at being on the WWE Network.

One of my favorite sections is the Old School section but they have added very little to it since the launch of the Network.  I love watching the old house shows from Madison Square Garden and other places, including the 70's. Honestly I would love them to post some matches from the 60's if they had any.

The oldest card on Network is from 1975, which coincidentally features the PWI 1975 Match of the year!

March 17, 1975
Madison Square Garden

Texas Death Match
WWWF World Heavyweight Champion: “Living Legend” Bruno Sammartino w/ “The Golden Boy” Arnold Skaaland vs. Sprios Arion w/ “Classy” Fred Blassie

Referee: Eddie Gersh
Commentary: Vince McMahon

This was the classic silver rope ring that had the two hard cameras, one at ring level and the other angled down from a section or two up from the other hard camera.  I really like this second camera view.

The seconds clear the ring and the referee checks both men, Arion first, then while checking Bruno Arion pearl harbors Bruno with a right hand then delivers a series of kicks and stomps.  The referee backs Arion up and calls for the bell.

Bruno unloads on Arion with several blows then sends him into the ropes for a knee to the gut.  A few more strikes then a body slam and a two count for Sammartino.  Bruno backs Arion into the corner with some shoulder blocks to the mid-section before Bruno applies a bear hug.

Arion breaks the hold with an ear ringer.  Both men exchange blows from their knees then Arion takes control whipping Bruno into the turnbuckle and falling to the mat.   Arion delivers a series of kicks to the back and stomach.

Bruno gets to his feet and crowd comes alive, Arion continues to work Bruno over with blows to the lower back and mid-section.  Arion with a European uppercut good for a two count.  Bruno takes over with a series of punches and kicks.  Bruno gets riled up and the crowd comes alive again.  Bruno  knocks Arion out of the ring to the floor.

Arion slowly gets back in the ring and takes over on offence knocking Sammartino to the floor and then blatantly kicks Sammartino in the junk.  The referee allows this.  Some more kicks from Arion then a body slam for a two count.  The crowd is chanting Bruno with vigorous passion.

Bruno reverses an atomic knee drop attempt with a side headlock and punches to the head.  A series of knees to Arion’s back.  One knocks Arion over the top rope onto the apron, Bruno kicks him to the floor.  Bruno gets on the ring apron and kicks Arion into the ringside barricade, Arion takes a swing at fan.

Back in the ring Arion the kind of lock up with Bruno getting a side choke on Arion, then some more punches and kicks.  The crowd loves it when Bruno kicks Arion in the head while he is down so he keeps doing it.

Bruno locks in a rear chin lock, Vinnie calls it a Boston crab something very similar to it.  We get a rope break so Bruno stands on Arion’s head bouncing up and down while holding the ropes.  The exchange blows in the standing position.  Sammartino used the corner to kick Arion with both feet.

Arion knocks Bruno to the canvas and starts a series of various kicks and then punches followed by more kicks.  Arion goes for an abdominal stretch, Bruno reverses into a nice judo throw, followed by a hip toss and a body slam for a two count.

Bruno grabs a headlock, then is sent into the ropes eating a kick to the midsection.  Arion throws Bruno into the ropes who comes off with a kick of his own.  Another bodyslam by Bruno, Arion gets his foot on the ropes but the referee doesn’t see it.

Arion protests showing the referee what happened, but he doesn’t care.  Arion protest to Bruno, but he doesn’t care either.

The match wasn’t bad, but Match of the Year, seems unlikely.

I don't normally do match reviews like this with the blow by blow, but as we are talking about a Match of the Year I felt it necessary.

WWE Network: Table for 3 and more

Table For 3

Table for 3 is a new show on the WWE Network that features 3 wrestlers sitting around having a meal and talking about wrestling.  How could this not be good right?  Each episode has a different theme and wrestlers appearing are from different times in wrestling.   Each episode is about 22 minutes long, but I would like it if they were much, much longer.

Brass Ring
Kevin Owens, Dean Ambrose, Ceasro
One of my favorites so far with these three talking about their journey and rise in WWE to where they are now.  They also talk a lot about being on the independent scene and how it was there and some of the others wrestlers that they worked with.  Really good show.

IC Champions Club
Daniel Bryan, Ryback, & Dolph Ziggler
They briefly talk about what how the Intercontinental Championship was important to them when they were younger and how that want to make it that way again.   Hilarious stories of them being on the road together, wrestling each other, Ryback hurting Dolph, wanting to impress Bock Lesner, trying to get fans in Russia to cheer for him, calling Daniel Bryan a bully and so much more.  I laughed so much during this episode.

WCW Legends
Sting, DDP, & Vader.  They open up talking about Sting finally getting signed to WWE.  Then Sting and Vader talk about their WCW feud including Vader calling Sting the stiffest pretty boy he’d ever faced. By the way Vader health wise and shape wise looks great!  DDP talks about Sting and his WCW World Title Match on Nitro.
Other topics include NXT, Sting’s Wrestlemania match, John Cena, Harley Race, Sting getting Lex Lugar into WCW for the debut of Nitro, Ted Turner, WCW memories and more.

WWE 24

NXT Brooklyn
A behind the scenes look at NXT and their sell out show in Brooklyn on eve of SummerSlam.
This documentary starts back at NXT Arrival in February 2014 taking us all the way to Brooklyn.  They talk to a variety of NXT Wrestlers and Triple H about Florida Championship Wrestling, the Full Sail University crowd, taking NXT on the road, and more about the growth of NXT.
We go in-depth with Finn Balor, Sasha Banks, the evolution of Women’s wrestling, Bayley, and others.
A very detailed look at the Sasha Banks vs. Bayley match including footage of their mothers at ringside and post-mast celebration of the 4 Horsewoman.
We get a detailed look at the Main Event Ladder match pitting Champion Finn Balor vs. Kevin Owens.
It’s really cool listening to Triple H’s comments through-out as he clearly is a proud poppa when it comes to NXT and “his kids”
A couple things that were not covered that surprised me was nothing about the amazing entrance the Enzo and Big Cass got, Samoa Joe, and nothing at all about Jushin Liger.  They showed three brief clips of him in the final montage of the event.  The final image was Bayley hoisting the NXT Women’s Championship and crowd chanting her name.  Thea doesn’t surprise me as it really felt like they were putting the women’s division over hard, and rightfully so.

A pretty amazing hour and well worth checking out.

WWE Network Shows

WWE Networks has been putting out some great original programming lately.

The show “Table for 3” is three people having a meal together and just shooting the shit for 20 minutes to half an hour.  They have aired 3 episodes so far and each could not have been more different from the next.

Episode 1 “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff, & “Mean” Gene Okerlund
This was much too short and it seemed to end just as it started.  Piper tells a funny story about being arrested and forgetting that one of the people in the room actually bailed him out.

Episode 2 New Day” Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods, & Big E Langston
Three friends talking about how they became a team telling loads of inside jokes and genuinely having a great time in each other’s company.  Really fun feel good episode that makes you actually like New Day.

Episode 3 Madusa, Molly Holly, & Ivory
So excited when I heard about this episode, three legends of woman’s wrestling and what is the most interesting is that Molly had interaction with Madusa & Ivory through her career, but Madusa and Ivory never crossed paths in the ring.  The best story that comes out of this episode really finding out about the night Madusa threw the WWF Woman’s Championship into the garbage on Nitro.

There are some great future episodes featuring Dolph Ziggler, Daniel Bryan, & Ryback as well as another fearing Dean Ambrose, Kevin Owens, & Cesaro.

Corey Graves hosts two shows on WWE Network “Superstar Ink” & “Culture Shock” both shows are less than ten minutes.
“Superstar Ink” talks to the Superstars of the WWE about their tattoo’s, why they got them, and what they mean to them.
“Culture Shock” features Graves touring around to different Pop Culture or unique places to examiner the odder side traveling.  He visits places like Marvel Comics, The Preakness, X Games, Hardcore Tattoo, Fisherman’s Wharf and more.  I haven’t watched all them yet but the ones I have seen are decent.
Graves makes a good host and I could see him hosting longer episodes of this show.

Renee Young host “Unfiltered” a casual talk show type show that features interviews with wrestlers and Hollywood types in various locations.  The duration of the shows vary from 10 to 30 minutes.  They follow no real format other than Renee asking questions.   I haven’t watched every episode but the Seth Rollins and Steve Amell ones were decent.

“Legends with JBL” is the newest show on the Network.  The first two episodes are a 2 part interview with Eric Bischoff and were filmed in a cable news channel style setting with both men sitting in chairs sort of facing each other behind a coffee table.  Both parts were excellent with Bischoff going into details that we haven’t heard before.

WWE Network has what looks to be a great show about NXT showing us the journey of superstars behind the scenes.

WWE Network MSG Special Thoughts

Madison Square Garden
October 3, 2015
House Show live special in WWE Network

No opening pyro the set up and entrance is that of a normal house show
Commentators JBL, Byron Saxton, and Rich Brennan.  Eden Stiles handled ring announcer duties.

Dolph Ziggler & Randy Orton vs. Sheamus & Rusev w/ Summer Rae
Decent opening match with Dolph taking the Ricky Morton heat before getting the hot tag to Orton.  RKO out of nowhere later and Orton gets the pin on Sheamus.   Crowd was hugely hot for Orton.
After the match Rusev called Sheamus a stupid American and called him useless, Sheamus brogue kicked him.  7/10

Video package from Raw of Rollins attacking Corporate Kane with a chair leading to Demon Kane coming out to attack him.

Backstage, Renee Young interviews with Corporate Kane on crutches.  He talked about helping Seth Rollins being worried about the Demon that keeps attacking him and how he would help stop it.

Stardust vs. Neville
Pretty standard back and forth match with Neville hitting red arrow for the win. 5/10

Backstage, Renee Young interviews Paul Heyman who cuts yet another awesome promo as only he can do.

Video package for the upcoming NXT behind the scenes special coming soon to WWE Network that honestly looks amazingly good!  Debuts after Raw this Monday, 10/05/2015

Team Bella: Nikki, Brie, & Alicia Fox vs. Team PCB: Paige, Becky Lynch, & Divas Champion: Charlotte
Should be noted Bella’s were announced and came out as a team where as Team PCB had individual introductions playing off the tension in the team.  Side note, I really just can’t stand Nikki Bella at all anymore and would not be upset if something horrible, yet non-life threatening befell her.  Let’s get this straight, it’s not that she’s such a great heal and that’s why I don’t like her…I just don’t like her personally.  Like I don’t like Rey Mysterio.
Basically Paige is a bitch to Becky and Charlotte through-out the match then they dessert her and Paige is pinned after a rack attack from Nikki.  Good match though, nothing breath taking 6/10

Paige cuts a post-match promo essentially continuing her slow burn heal turn saying she doesn’t deserve to be treated like this and that she doesn’t know what she to them to make them do this.

Video package showing footage from Raw & Smackdown of the Wyatt and Reigns fued.  I don’t care at all about them being in a Hell in a Cell match.
Intercontinental Champion: Kevin Owens vs. Chris Jericho
Pre-Match promo Jericho announces that October 3, 1990 was his debut match making tonight his 25th Anniversary in wrestling.  He points out Lance Storm in the front row his first ever opponent.  Then talks about his father playing hockey at MSG.  Jericho then points out Don Callis & Lenny St. Clair aka Dr. Luther also in the front row.  Not mentioned, but sitting next to them was Arnold Skaaland’s wife Betty.   She must be in her 80’s and I think it’s amazing that she wants to be there watching wrestling after all these years.

Owens comes out to a big ovation.    Outstanding match once again from Kevin Owens, this time with Jericho has his dance partner.  I would love to see these two guys again.  We get our first “This is Awesome” chant, deservedly so.  Non-stop action from bell to bell you wouldn’t believe it was their first ever match together.  They hit everything except the pop-up powerbomb, Owen’s took the win reversing a second walls of Jericho attempt into a small package.  8.5/10
Owens wished Jericho a Happy Anniversary as he was walking to the back.  He also stopped to taunt a crying child. Owens post-match antics 10/10

Promo for the new WWE Network Show “Breaking Ground” which is about the WWE Performance Center, looks greats.  Debuts 10/26/15.

Backstage shot of the Big Show looking angry.

Video Package of the Dudley Boys vs. New Day

Tag Team Champions: New Day: Kofi Kingston & Big E w/ Xavier Woods vs. The Dudley Boys: Bubba Ray & Devon

Pre-Match Promo during New Day’s entrance continued the hilarity they bring every week.  They played down the Dudley Boys calling this the end of their Goodbye Tour then continued their “Save the Tables Campaign.”  Dudley’s got a good ovation.

Crowd was hot for this match still hyped from the Owens vs. Jericho match.  Lots of “We want tables” and “New Day Sucks” chants.   New Day dominated both Devon & Bubba Ray early with quick tags and wear down holds.  Dudley’s hit a 3D out of nowhere and Woods hit the ring causing the disqualification.  New Day then beat down the Dudley’s then brought a table into the ring.  Xavier Woods played taps on this Trombone, back to too the action in the ring.  Dudley’s cleared Kofi & Big E then put Woods through the table standing tall.  Dudley’s win, New Day still champs.  7/10

Jon Stewart shown front row ringside with his son.

Unnecessary video package shown hyping the Brock Lesnar/ Big Show feud with some history re-written as they show clips of the 2002 Survivor Series match where Show beats Lesnar for the WWE Championship with no mention at all of Paul Heyman turning on Lesnar at they show, they even showed a clip of Heyman out of context being shocked and Lesnar being pinned.

Brock Lesnar w/ Paul Heyman vs. The Big Show
Tremendous ovation at the opening note of Lesnar’s entrance music
Straight from the opening bell Show no sold a couple Lesnar clotheslines then he reversed an attempted double leg dumping Brock over the top rope.  Apparently Show is playing the unstoppable monster for this match.  Lots of Suplex City chants.  Whoah!! Three quick chokeslams from Show followed by a loooooong two count.  Show goes for the knock-out punch Lesnar ducks, 4 german suplex and an F-5 later Lesnar has his arm raised.  Pretty high impact 4 minutes of wrestling.  8/10

Post-Match Lesnar heads to the back, then decides to return to the ring where a the very stoppable monster is tossed around again with an overhead belly to belly suplex and another F-5.  Crowd sings nah-nah-nah-nah goodbye to Show as he leaves the ring.

Promo video for the Bayley vs. Sasha Banks 30 Minute Iron Man Match for NXT Takeover Respect this Wednesday 10/7/2015 on WWE Network.

Hype video for Cena vs. Rollins for the United States Championship Steel Cage Match including footage of John Stewart costing Cena the title at Summerslam

Steel Cage Match: United States Champion: John Cena vs. World Champion: Seth Rollins
The World Heavyweight Championship is not on the line.
Cena came out second, was greeted with “John Cena sucks” chanted to the beat of his entrance music.   We get that big match feel with the introductions taking place once both were in the ring.

Rollins using the cage early throwing Cena face first into the cage, I’m a fan of cage matches but I like some blood in my cage matches.  I’m 10 minutes into this match and really I’m not that impressed.  Crowd is into it but their previous matches at Summerslam and Night of Champions were much better.   They basically took every generic cage match spot and did them.

Rollins gets the upper hand and Cena is down in the cage he looks like he’s about to escape over the top when Demon Kane comes down stopping him.  Rollins then decides lets goes for a frog splash off the top of the cage, eats canvas, then an AA and Cena retains.  6/10

Post-match Demon Kane enters the cage hitting Rollins with a chokeslam then a tombstone piledriver.  Demon Kane hold the WWE Championship high before dropping it on Rollins and leaving the ring to end the show.

Overall it was a really good show it definitely had a different feel to it as the presentation was more than a House Show, but definitely not a PPV or Television event.  Matches had a house show feel to them as the focus was definitely on the wrestling more than anything else.  You know what it was, it was like a Coliseum Home Video exclusive type event.  That’s exactly what it was!

I would like to see WWE do more specials like this for the MSG house shows or other big house shows it would make WWE Network even more appealing.

Interesting note, no pyro of any kind was used, not for the opening, Dudleys, Lesnar, Kane, no one.

Random Wrestling: From the WWE Network and You Tube

WWE Network

World Class Championship Wrestling
Episode 66, Monday March 21, 1983
Decent episode featuring a midget match Little CoCoa vs. Billy The Kid, Iceman King Parsons vs. The Great Kabuki, Killer Karl Krupp in action, and David Von Erich vs. Buddy Roberts of the Fabulous Freebirds.  I always like the opening theme to this show, best match was David Von Erich vs. Roberts continuing the Freebirds and Von Erich feud, a surprising clean finish to this one, also the ring announcer forgets Billy The Kid’s name.

You Tube

Brian Myers Making Towns
Episode 24 posted June 4th
This episode is my favorite episode to date of his show.  Footage from Wrestlemarica in North Carolina and a Create a Pro show in Long Island.  Best part of this episode is the footage he shot from her merchandise table of the Bullet Club: Big LG & Karl Anderson’s tag team match wrestling in and around the merchandise tables.

Commentators: Jim Ross & Tony Schiavone
6 Woman Tag Team Match
NWA US Women’s Champion: Misty Blue Simmes, Heidi Lee Morgan & Zula vs. Kat Leroux, Linda Dallas, & Mad Dog Debbie.  Teddy Long was the referee
Decent match, Zulu was the only one that I hadn’t heard of before.  Very large black woman wrestling in  a pleather jacket, I was assume very green based her bumps.  Of all these girls Kat Leroux was my favorite, she usually played the heel to Misty Blue’s face.  Misty Blue picked up the victory for her team after a splash off the top rope onto Mad Dog Debbie.
