Re-Post: DVD Review WWE Top 50 Superstars of All Time

Re-Posted from my original blog as I am removing all wrestling references off of it making it a family blog.

Hosted by Todd Grisham, WWE’s 50 Greatest Superstars is an excellent countdown documentary of the 50 greatest stars as decided by the current superstars in the WWE.

Each wrestler featured is highlighted in a 2.5 – 3 minute bio-clip featuring highlights of great moments as well as comments both old and newly recorded by fellow superstars.  The bio-clips for the top 5 were a couple minutes longer.  Most of the bio-clips are extremely emotional and can make you laugh, smile, and at times cry.

One of my favorite bio-clips is of Bruno Sammartino for the comments from Vince J McMahon and the old comments from Bruno himself.  I would truly love WWE to put out some documentaries on the 60’s & 70’s with the old footage.

William Regal, Arn Anderson (both should have their own DVD’s), and Matt Striker provide some of the best comments on almost every superstar.  Other’s that comment frequently are the Miz, JJ Dillon, John Cena, Jerry Lawler & Billy Kidman.  There are many, many more that comment as well.

As far as placement on the list, I don’t agree with Rey Mysterio being in the top 10, and am appalled that Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard were left off the list.

Number 1 on the list is Shawn Michaels, and he deserves it, Chris Jericho sums it up best with, “He steals the show at every event that he is on, because he’s Shawn Michaels and that’s what he does.”

The Extra’s on this 3 DVD set are amazing as they cover a broad spectrum of time including:

NWA World Championship: Lou Thesz vs. Argentina Rocca
BuffaloNY

Women’s Champion: The Fabulous Moolah vs. Susan Green
Madison Square Garden – June 16, 1975

Boxing Match: Gorilla Monsoon vs. Andre The Giant
Puerto Rico – September 23, 1977

AWA Heavyweight Championship Match: Jerry “The King” Lawler vs. Curt Hennig
August 13, 1988

WWE Championship: “Nature Boy” Ric Flair vs. Bret “Hit Man” Hart
SaskatoonCanada – October 12, 1992

Undertaker, Ken, Matt & Jeff Hardy vs. “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Triple H, Edge & Chritian             RAW – April 23, 2001

Eddie Guerrero vs. Big Show
Smackdown! – April 15, 2004

World Heavyweight Championship: Edge vs. The Undertatker
WrestleMania XXIV – March 30, 2008

Plus many, many more matches, 21 in all.

Definitely a great DVD to add to the collection!

Kenny Johnson Wrestling Documentaries

A couple days prior to the Limitless Wrestling Killin’ & Thrillin’ show on November 14, 2015 promoter Randy Carver shared a You Tube video that was a documentary about Tim Donst who was appearing at the Limitless event.

The documentary is entitled “Wrestle Donst Wrestle” and is about Tim Donst’s battle with cancer and his realization that he may never wrestle again.  It was excellent!  The documentary was done by Kenny Johnson and is posted on his YouTube channel.  In the About section he describes himself as;

"I'm an aspiring documentary filmmaker living in Columbia, MD.
I make short and long documentaries, and all kinds of videos about people I meet along the way.
I also love Professional Wrestling."

In total he has 13 documentaries ranging from 8 to over 30 minutes in length.  I’ve watched them all and They are truly fantastic!  He has features on Johnny Gargano, Sami Callihan, Kimber Lee, Tim Donst, Ethan Page, The Handicapped Heroes, Greg Excellent, Adam Cole, Veda Scott, Timothy Thatcher, Intergender Wrestling,  and his newest is on Johnny Gargano and Candice LaRae: A Wrestling Couple.

Most of his footage appears to be shot at AIW, CZW, and GBW shows.  I don’t know much about filmmaking, but I know what looks good and what looks like garbage.  These are so well done.  Sound and video quality are superior, no matter the content if it looks and sounds bad it’s tough to watch.  His editing style how he mixes the subjects narrative with the footage and the background music is wonderful.  I truly am looking forward to what he puts out in the future.

He also has lost of other non-wrestling and short subject documentaries that a worth checking out as well.

The Sheik

I recently found a documentary on Netflix called “The Sheik” about Khosrow Vaziri the legendary Iron Sheik!  I can’t recall hearing anything about this prior to finding it and I honestly wasn’t expecting much.  Recently the Iron Sheik has been presenting himself as a loud obnoxious old man who curses out everyone stating that he would suplex them, put them in the camel clutch, break their back, fuck their ass, and make them humble.  I really didn’t expect much if any substance to this.  That being said I am pleased to say that I was proven wrong.

This is an excellent documentary that starts with briefly talking about the Sheiks life in Iran, becoming an amateur wrestler, the bodyguard for the Shah of Iran and eventually coming to the United States.  Upon his arrival in 1971 he became an assistance coach to the US Olympic Team which eventually led to his meeting with Verne Gagne which started his professional wrestling career.

The story of the Iron Sheik is told through extensive interview with his family and fellows wrestlers including extensive sit down interviews with The Rock, Bruce Prichard, Jake Roberts, Keith Elliot Greenburg, Jim Ross, and with stories from Jim Duggan specifically about their arrest for possession, King Kong Bundy, Nasty Boys, Ron Simmons, Sunny, Jimmy Hart, Nikolai Volkoff, Bob Orton, Hulk Hogan, Mick Foley, Jim Duggan, Jimmy Snuka, and others.  It also features still photos of Sheik through-out his life and footage of him in action with Mid-South Wrestling, World Wrestling Council, and on the Independents.

Another surprising revelation is that the Sheik is married to a wonderful woman that he met and got married to back in 1975 and has a beautiful family where is grandchildren call him Papa Sheik.
WWF World Heavyweight Champion: The Iron Sheik with "Ayatollah" Classy Freddy Blassie
This documentary seems to have been the brain child of Jian & Page Magen, the children of a childhood friend of the Sheik and these two are like family to him.  They idolized Sheik growing up and when they first reconnected with him in 2006 they were shocked at the state they found him in.  After the murder of his daughter Marissa a few years prior Sheik took a turn for the worse when it came to his drug abuse, which he calls his medicine.

The biggest revelation of this documentary to me is that The Sheik the way he acts currently, the cursing and loud mouth brash behavior, is a work.  That’s right the Magen brothers have made it their job to make The Sheik relevant beyond the wrestling world so he will be remember.  I also think the reason they do it is to keep him busy and not relapse with drug use.

This is one of the best non-WWE wrestling documentaries that has come out in a long time and well worth you checking out.
